hi all, im looking at getting a cheap amd 64 Bit processor something along the lines of an xp3200, i could stretch to an xp3500 but is it worth it? im going to overclock it in an asrock pcie/agp mobo, do they both overclock by the same amounts or is one better than the other? what about the cheap opterons, worth considering? im mainly using the comp for general stuff plus a bit of gaming

If you don't need the dual AGP/PCI-E slot then I'd recommend getting an Epox nForce 4 based board as these are great clockers

Just a small point of order - the Athlon XP and the Athlon 64 are completely different architectures. The Athlon 64 3200+ is a fair bit quicker than the XP 3200+ :)

I'd personally get the 3700+. This has 1MB of L2 cache and it's a great clocker - some have even been beating the Opterons!

If you can't get this (which is the pick of the single core A64s IMO) get the 3200+. This is also a good clocker, better than the 3500+ and great value. The 3500+ isn't a good choice IMO - it's more expensive than the 3200+ but not as good a clocker. £10 more will get you the 3700+ - double the cache and a far better clocker

i dont need agp if i buy a cheap pcie graphics Card, im not really a gamer so a cheap one will do

xp are fairly dated now. But my brother has an xp 2000 @ 1.8ghz which still runs his pc super fast.

As said get an Athlon 64 3200 and overclock it. I have one clocked to 2.5Ghz and it runs quick 'n' fine. :)
 
If you're not a gamer just get the cheapest card you can find, something like an X300 or 6200 will be plenty

Bare in mind that the 6200 Turbo Cache and the X300 Hyper Memory use system ram - the standard 6200 and X300 don't

The XP are old hat but you said that you wanted an XP3200+ or 3500+ - I was just pointing out that the A64 chips are completely different :)

thanks for the heads up, my mistake with the names, what i should have said was i wanted a 64 bit processor and not an xp***** :o

I would like to o/c my A64 3200 as well but I am rather confused by the method. Can you explain (or point me to somewhere that can) clearly how to do it. My system is as per spec.
 
The easiest way to start would be to reduce your HT multiplier to 4X, your ram to 166MHz and keep raising your HTT speed bit by bit.

When you encounter instability, increase your voltage slightly. You can use Prime 95 and/or OCCT to test stability

I wouldn't go above 1.55V on air for a 90nm A64. Keep an eye on the temps
 
3500's arnt bad clockers at all, my first 3500 i had upto 2.8ghz :S.

Imo just get a good stepping venice core;) all *** ranges have their good and bad steppings.

tbh i used to get that speed out of my 3000+ venice no probs at all.
