basically im looking at processors and motherboard bundles of ebay. and ive seen amd quads are a lot cheaper than intels. Can pick up a amd quad core motherboard bundle 130 quid brand new , but can also pick up an intel quad core q8200 processor for around 80-100 second hand and if i go for an intel will be buying a motherboard of a friend for it. which is the best for speed and in the long term?

There is no general guidline that can be given on this. The only way you can get any useful feedback is to compare a specific AMD CPU against a specific Intel CPU.
You have to give example of what AMD CPU exactly against the q8200.
If its part of a bundle we need to know what else comes with the CPU to determine if its good value for money.
Its also helpful to say what you intend to use the computer for, this will affect what is the best choice of CPU.

Depends what you would like it to do. Intel bangs out more power without overclocking, but then you're paying the premium to enter into a end of line chipset.
I chose AMD with a 800 series mobo simply because it gives me the option of seating a 6core/8core CPU in there when the need arises!
Oh and its cheaper!

I'd go for phenom II mate. Don't bother looking at the core2s if you're starting a new build. Depending on budget i'd be looking at an x3 720 or above ideally.

Agree on Phenom II but I don't think you can buy new Phenom 720s any more?

True, I didn't realise they were that rare now! I'd look at getting the 955 in that case.

yeah i was thinking of switching to amd not many people are using socket 775 anymore.

If you're currently on 775 now I wouldn't bother doing a complete system overhaul just yet as the new sockets are out next year. Besides, the 775 quads are still doing the business.

Go for AMD to save your money... I wont bother spend too much money, I only interesting for cheaper prices when avaiable, dont bother for high power like fast speed - it no worth after all...
