AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

I have been unable to overclock my cpu nb at all. I suppose it is because I have 4 sticks of RAM (adding up to 8GB). If I sold my RAM and bought 8GB (2x4) would that relax the strain on my mobo and allow for nb overclocking do you guys think?

I was running 4 sticks with mine, and am still with the 965.

The X6's have the best CPU-NB's of all the Phenoms.

Okay so strange things are afoot:

I was in windows.
Restarted
Went into BIOS
Changed nb multi to x11 (to give nb of 2200)
Saved changes and exit
Would not boot (fans never spin down, screen blank, fans keep spinning)

Press power button, computer turns off
Press power button, fans come on, nothing else
Press power button, computer turns off
Unplug power cable and wait. Plug back in. Press power button
Computer powers up, go into BIOS and return settings to AUTO
save changes and exit.
Computer boots up

Next:
Turn computer off.
Take out 2 of my sticks of RAM
Power up
Go into BIOS and set nb multi to x11
Computer powers up fine
Confirm nb in cpuz

Restart
Set nb multi to x15 and nb v to 1.3
computer powers up fine
confirm nb in cpuz

Shut down
Replace 2 sticks of RAM
computer powers up fine
confirm nb of 3000 and 8gb of RAM

Restart
Set BIOS settings back to auto
save and restart
computer will not boot, fans never spin down etc

Basically I now cant boot unless my nb is set to 3000.

WTF?

Have reversed the process by removing the 2 sticks. Booting up and setting bios back to auto. Then replacing the sticks again.

Well at least I know my chip can OC the north bridge but wtf with the ram stuff.

EDIT: as usual with computer problems this one is user error/stupidity. :o I was running my 8GB of RAM at 1.35v. The rated voltage for my platinum but a considerable undervolt for my obsidian. This config passes memtest etc but was clearly causing problems here. I have upped the memory over voltage to 1.43v and I can now change the cpu nb happily.

Managed to get 3.91 out of my 965BE today after much hair pulling. Seems my mobo HATES OC'ing this CPU via multi for some reason. If I so much as look at the CPU Multi it throws a fit and won't be stable even at 3.5GHz.

OC via FSB and et voila 3.91 and OC'd CPU-NB.

Ah well, happy now :D

Hey guys I currently have a AMD Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition, unlocked to quad core and OC'ed to 3.6 by just upping the multiplier to 18. I really wanna hit that magical 4ghz, but I am abit clueless. I can't just keep upping the multi can I? Do I need to fiddle with voltages etc?

Cheers in advance, appreciate it

All change here again! A mate seen my x6 in action and desperatly wanted similar performance for his video editing stuff so I sold him my 125w 1055T, Gigabyte 88GMA UD2H and RAM and bought... a 95w 1055T, 4GB OCZ 1600 spec ops and an Asus M4A89GTD Pro/USB3 :) I swear I am keeping this damn setup for more than a week, it's my third x6 :p

Need to get clocking this bad boy. This morning I set the FSB to 250, multi to 14 and CPU voltage to 1.25 and left it priming, 42c says Hwmonitor. The Asus BIOS is a bit more complicated than the Gigabyte...

Ewaf, I just got a 555be and it unlocked no probs to quad as well :) so chuffed as would have been happy with the dual core I originally bought. Tested briefly as quad on prime for 35 mins and all was ok, temp about 40, I think that might be high but i'll look into that. I'll post OC results over next day or 2. Firstly going to read the links on page 1 about how to do a decent OC though ;)

Looking good leesolo, nice OC.

Just to make sure is the 49-50 temp that you got from core temp? You should not use coretemp with phenom chips. It gives an inaccurate reading. Use HWmonitor and the cpu temp will be either TMPIN0 or TMPIN1 depending on your motherboard.

I've been using a temp utility called Smart Guardian, measures Core, system and NB Chip plus controls the cooler fan speed and gives readouts of a few other things like vid etc. Utility came with the DFI board - i'm also checking the smart guardian against Speed fan - both temp's are within 1 degree of each other for all 3 temp readouts. yeah I knew about Core temp, my prev chip was a brisbane so It didn't work with that either lol :)

I'll post up a screen shot from earlier today that shows the Smart guardian utility the temps left to right all correspond respectivley with temp readout 1,2 and 3 on speedfan.

any thought's or comments are welcome

PS, yeah i'll get HW as well, thanks for the heads up :)

I reduced the size so it would be easier to read on here... guess I reduced it too much ! sorry... still getting used to all this.

Sorry, forgive my ignorance once more, but what additional settings are you referring too ? an i'll let you know ;)

Voltages (according to BIOS) for vcore, ram, nb (and clock speed) graphics etc :p

If you could list it all that would be epic :D

Please do HeX, looks amazing!

It would be epic if i could remember it all as I didn't write it down:) but i'll look into my Bios note all relevant details an post them up, as I have not changed any they should all be the same, apart from the ram which is back at 800 (had at 400 as i did not want it to intefere at that point) and voltage was 1.8.

Graphics is xfx 4850xxx 650 1150

MB DFI LP M2RS 790GX

4gb OCZ PLAT 800

ok got a long list of info, an i'll be up front i'm not 100% sure what some of it is and does (yet) still reading Dolk's post on Phenom OCing. An I took another screenie, of multi at 20 = 4.0, which is below and should be full size. BTW i know memory is not at freq I said above it's higher on this S/S.

vcore 1.375
Memory 1.8
HTT 1.2
SB PLL 1.2
NB HTT 1.2
NB Core 1.3
NB Clock Ratio auto (2000)
HT Link Freq Auto
HTT Clock 200
HTT Gap 5
