AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

So how important is it to pass a Prime 95 Blend and how would it compare to the AMD Overdrive Stabilty test?

I ask because I can pass the AMD @ 4.0Ghz but Prime fails in less than 2 mins, it also passes Fritz Chess, 3d Marks, even playing BC2 for an hour.

I would also like to know what you guys are setting your voltages at, so I can phathom whether I'm going to high.

I'm currently @ CPU - 1.475, NB - 1.20, HTT - 1.29.

Cheers!

amd od is pretty crap, mine does the same but tbh you really want it to pass a good 8-10 hrs on prime 95
one of my overclocks passed prime95 but failed occt so its worth going through a few different stress tests too mate

Think I'm going to give mine another go tonight. AMD say these chips are ok upto about 1.8V on liquid nitrogen cooling, but whats the highest you could dare go to on air? I know mine's 1.55v because the temps go too high after that.

What about a watercooling system but with a chiller type thing to chill the water to say 0C? Like a fridge uses?

Also Gareth I sent you a trust email last week dude, just in case you hadn't recieved it! :p

Not all motherboards allow CPU-NB voltage setting. IIRC you need at least an AM2+ chipset (and then it's not guarenteed).

Whats stable? If it will do 8 hour Prime Blend, Medium length S&M and Standard 5 pass Intelburn without errors that's good enough for me. Over at bit-tech they do 12 hour prime blend with 3dmark06 on loop (not available in free version) for their motherboard tests. If everything's still running when they come back (and it sometimes isn't even at stock) they consider it stable.

After taking gareth170's advice above and reading "UNLEASH THE DRAGON" pointed out in page 1 by Big.Wayne, (This guide this is a must read in all honesty), I've gone for a low voltage Overclock for the time being @ 3.675Ghz/[email protected]/1.17vCPUNB/1.29vHTT, Memory 6GB DDR2840 6-6-6-18.

Temps are still low 60° on Prime though:eek:, must invest in a CPU cooler so will two of these http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-001-FD fit on http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-000-TL without having to buy extra pins etc?

Will post some screens later, just trying to find a nice picture to fit the thread!

For £5 more you could get an H50 from another site ;)

It beats the pants out of my old dual fan thermalright TRUE (with 2 fans on the H50, but you get one in the box)

Oh. Sorry Meaker, the site must have been down. When I first clicked on it nothing happened.

Isnt the Baram better than the H50? I have no personal experience but that is the impression I have been getting from around the place.

Well his review temps are MUCH higher than mine, I can only assume he did something wrong or his case was bad for the cooler.

You do need a case with a LOT of out-take capabilities and the H50 set to intake.

Well, with room temperature being the difference between a pass and a system freeze in S&M Floating Point @ 2100 NB, I decided to go for an upgrade to me Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro.

Gone for a Scythe Kama Angle (cheap n cheerful bay purchase). From reviews i've read, it can outperform the TRUE or Baram if installed in a case with favourable airflow (i.e. exhaust / PSU fans nearby - which mine does). I didn't fancy an H50 due to the extra cost and reports of shoddy build quality and unreliability.

The Xigmatec s1283 variants look to have excellent performance for the money. One of those would have been my next choice.
