AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Yeah - I generally agree with it (read it a while back so talking from memory). NB overclocking certainly seems to make a lot of difference to minimum game framerates.

Having said that - at lower RAM speeds (I'm on rather basic DDR2) I'm rather dubious of the benefit of overclocking the NB without also raising the HT Link in games. I've got better results from having them both at 2100 than having CPU-NB @ 2400 and HT @ 1800 for example. CPU-NB @ 2400 and HT link @ 2100 runs worse for me than having both of them at 2100.

I have not posted my OCing results for a while but I have been playing around with my new 555 unlocked to x4. Managed to get it up to 3.79 but no higher on sensible vcore.

Thought I would do a comparison between a cpunb and htlink of 2600 with the stock of 2000 (a bit higher because of my increase in the bus speed).

Used friz chess benchmark. Not sure if that is the most sensible but comments welcome. It looks like there is an increase but not a huge one.

Hey eddyc,

I think Fritz is pretty much *processor* only? . . . i.e I don't think it shoves gigabytes of data backwards and forwards like some other tests? . . . you could test this theory by seeing if the Fritz scores jump up and down noticeably as you raise and lower the CPU multi only! :)

Nice unlock and good clock btw!

well mine is deffo snappier now with the nb up from stock only at 2.4 but will try 2.6 tomorrow when get a bit of time what voltage for 2.6 rough estimte pls :D

Ah. That would explain the small difference. Any suggestions for a benchmark?

Any suggestions for my clock would be good as well. I am not sure what to try next. I could not get 19x multi stable even at 200 and 1.5vcore. And I cant get 210x18.5 stable either. I have tried a couple of runs between 205 and 210 but they all fail at 1.4875 vcore. Is there anywhere left to go?

Also my copy of Juarez arrived today. Cheers very much Wayne. :D

210x18.5 is 3.88ghz,
They seem to do max of around 3.8-3.83ghz @ quad fully stable and after you'll have to bump volts to around 1.52-1.55 to get 3.9 or so.

Tbh I'm not sure if it's worth it, sure I could put in 1.55 and with good cooling run it at 4ghz+ but there isn't much of an increase.

I currently run mine at 3.7 with just 1.42v and 2.75HT/NB and ram at 1700mhz 9-9-9-22 T1 which gives me sick memory bandwith.

I'll need 1.45-1.47v for around 3.83 or something but it makes almost no diff, it's already fast as heck with that NB/HT/RAM settings : ) and runs super cool (34idle 40-45load in case with no airflow and zalman 9700 ).

It's best to run those under 50c : ).

So both eddyc & PhoenixUK running AMD® Phenom™ II X2 555 BE @ X4 3.8GHz! :D

That's sweet value for money £££ . . . Try and post up some Prime Blending screenies when you get time! :)

I think I've posted some before already, once 4,5h and 2IBT runs and another 7h or something with diff settings.

Don't have much time to fiddle recently anymore but I think I've got a sweet spot now at 3.71 and just 1.42vcore with NB/HT @ 2756 and ram at 1696 T1 9/9/9/22.

Could push 100-140mhz more and bit NB/HT/RAM with 1.46-1.48v but I cba, makes next to no diff now : ).

Wayne grab one of those till you can, seems like the first batches are all 100% unlocks. I personally haven't seen one yet that doesn't. It's a total steal, must been one of the best buys I've ever made.

Phoenix: no I have load line set to 16%. I find that it eliminates vdroop and very slightly increases vcore under load. At 19% it keeps vcore steady at all times. I dont think you want it at 0 do you? Wont that massively increase the vcore under load?

Your settings sound like a good idea. It might well be worth me dropping back a little to get lower vcore and get it cooler. I currently have it on 1.4875 and get max temp of low 50s. Cool n quiet is on though so no worries when not loaded.

Big.Wayne: My current settings are 10 hours prime blend stable. I feel ashamed I didn't take a screenie. :o I am doing some encoding at the moment but I'll do another blend in the next few days and post it on up. Got to love the 555s.

Mind a suggestion gareth?

I notice you have upped your cpu-nb to 2600 but not the ht link. You might want to try upping that to 2600 as well. I think the best performance comes from having them the same.

Nice OC :). Impressively low vcore.

Nicely done Gareth.

All my stuff has arrived but I won't be able to put it together til this evening. I am running some older 2x2Gb OCZ 1800MHz memory that is rated at 1.9V.

Are there voltage limits on the IMC as in the case of the i5/i7 for 24/7 use? Because on my old p45 board this memory liked around 1.94V for up to 1700MHz CL7

i think yes.

i have Patriot 4gb 1600mhz cl7 rated at 1.7v but it need 1.75v to be stable.

Hey gurusan, I'm not sure the IMC is powered in the same way as the newer Intel stuff? . . . at least I'm not aware of any connection between the vDimm voltage and the onchip IMC i.e I think you can set any vDimm you like without worrying about any knock-on effect to the IMC :)

gareth170, hows it going? :) . . nice result, don't forget your name in the screenies and watch the excessive quoting! ;)
