AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

I think the Athlon X2 5000+ 45nm was released on the quiet. No press releases, no review samples sent out and most of them will end up in OEM machines (where apparrently there is still some demand for Athlon X2 xxxx brand recognition).

Just a way for AMD to clear defective and / or EOL dies quickly I guess. Phenom II 8 series is EOL isn't it? AM2+ Denebs certainly are.

Nice of AMD to drop in in the Phenom FX name easter egg thoug :).

Aww man - I am so envious of u dudes hitting 4Ghz. I can't even get my system to run prime95 for more than four hours without crashing on stock settings!!!

Any help would be much appreciated as I'm aiming to OC its pants off. Prime95 doesnt just stop as usual when it errors but it stops responding completely. Had a new motherboard so its defo not that. Theres waaaaay too many options in BIOS - I can't even find simple vcore settings (offset stuff just gets all confusing)- lol

Running Antec 902 (loads of airflow), Corsair H50 cooling, AMD 965BE (c3 stepping), Asus M4A98GX-Pro/USB3 (yep ready for hex core ;) ), Corsair 2x2Gb PC16000 [email protected] etc etc.

Can't say I'm a noob to OC-ing, Previous rigs were FX-53 @ 2.6, moving to a Q6600 @ 3.4 (think this 965BE only just keeps up with it! - so much for an upgrade eh!)

Coretemp reports my CPU VID @ 1.4000v!! - is that poor? I recall the higher the VID on coretemp the lower the oc-ing (that was on the Q6600 though) - not sure if this applies to AMD stuff though?. thanks.

PS All this HTT stuff and voltages is well confuzzling!

Hi zoomee, welcome to the thread! :) . . . make sure you read the welcome post and preferably the whole thread before you give up, some good results have been had, plenty of screenshots etc etc! (an hour or two reading should do it!) . . .

Obviously before getting into the overclocking side of things we would need to get your system fully Prime Blend stable @ stock! . . . . I see you are running one of the latest AM3 mobos, has it got the latest BIOS? . . . have you reset BIOS defaults and tried running Memtest from a bootable CD-ROM/USB stick? . . . not sure what would cause Prime95 to "stops responding completely" on a stock system?

thanks for the welcome even though I'm hijacking your thread dude ;)

Yep - priority is to get it rock solid stable before ocing. Think its the memory settings as everything was set to auto and it just got picked up as 1300Mhz @ 1.5v - so I've just changed it to [email protected] (which is wot my memory is rated at)

Was posting here in the hope someone else was using same board as me for oc-ing (to copy settings etc.) - its too bloomin new this board! - nothing on asus website, Coretemp is only showing readings for 1 core and doesnt show revision either. Even CPU-Z (which allegedly supports 890 chipset shows it as a 785! lol). SPD settings don't show in CPU-Z either - I'm so used to using these tools for even the basics I'm lost without em lol. i don't even think AMD's overdrive tool is ready for the 890 chipset yet either.

The good news is on stock volts/clocks I'm only hitting 40DegreeC with fan turned to low and been priming (blend) for a couple of hours now no hiccups with new voltage settings for RAM (fingers crossed)

Take a look at this for an idea of the settings I have to deal with - just makes me feel faint!:

Looks good to me! :) . . . it's nice you get a real-time voltage display . . . how long have you had this new kit then? . . . if its a day or so then have a kit-kat and ease into it slowly but surely . . . hopefully one of the others thread contibuters who are using DDR3 may be able to help get your memory sorted!

zoomee, the problem could be the ram at 1600mhz. i get issues that prime95 crashs after about 4hours when i set the ram to 1600mhz. 1333mhz i don't get any problems

Oh yes I see! :) . . . on the AM2+/DDR2 system I am using along with DDR2-1066 . . . with the system at stock (HT Ref. 200) the memory gets set to 400MHz using the [2:1] memory multiplier, it gives me the option to push the memory straight to 533MHz (I forget the multi?) but sets some slack 7-7-7-x timings which takes a bit of effort to lower . . . on the other hand if I leave the DDR2 using the default [2:1] memory multiplier and just raise the HT Ref. Clock from [200] to [266] the sticks run happily at DDR2-1066 5-5-5-x

So would I be right in thinking you AM3 guys have a few upwards memory multipliers to get the sticks running at DDR3-1066/1333/1600 with a stock HT Ref.?

can some on recommend me the best cooler for a 995x4 3.2ghz please ?
I don't know if I am being paraonied but my temps seem really high.

CPU Temp is 40-42 idle and 58-60c under load,
And my GPU is 43 Idle and High 80's under load.

My setup is totally stock.
Asus Crosshair III Formula
1TB Samsung Spinpoint
650W Silverstone ST65ZF-GM PSU
4GB (2x2GB) Corsair Dominator DDR3, PC3-12800 (1600)
AMD Phenom II X4 955 stock 3.2GHz
1GB XFX HD5770
Lancool K58 Black Advanced Tower

I would also like to get into over-clocking if anyone would be willing to add me on msn for a chat would be much appreciated.

thanks Ant.

thats nothing when you think you may have to pay that again to buy a new chip when you cook it due to insufficient cooling :p

if your going for a high overclocked phenom 2 i would say get a baram as it will last well. you could skimp out and get cheaper fans i only suggested the apache super silents cause i use them and must admit they are very good great airflow with minimal noise if you do got the 2 fan route don't forget to buy a 3way PWM splitter with molex connector clicky >>>http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CB-031-AK&groupid=701&catid=48&subcat=

I think "cooked chips" have nothing to do with overclocking and everything to do with a nice piece of fried cod! ;)

i.e: I never had a cooked chip and never known anyone who had one either, although I reckon gurusan may have tried his best! :p

Indeed! :D

£30 is about my limit on cooling recommendations, at least for people who are not benchmarkers etc . . . although I do notice a lot of folks these days think nothing of splashing double that . . . I would be interested to know how much the other thread members have spent on their cooling and with hindsight was it money well spent or perhaps a bit OTT?
