AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

Cheers Pneumonic! :D . . . now just gotta figure out whats going on with gareth's DDR3 (his second set) and zoomee's DDR3 (first set) . . .

All I can think of at this moment is to test the system with one stick at a time? . . . also is 1t standard issue on AMD/DDR3?

Gareth: I take it you are running them in overdrive with B.E.M.P (Black Edition Memory Profile)? From what I can see some people are having issues with running the RAM at 1600mhz at stated latencies.

I guess the first thing to look at is does the B.E.M.P run them at 1t or 2t? Slowing it to 2t should give you more stability at little cost of performance...

your other option may be to try 1.85v... some people are even running these at 1.9v to get stable... I would imagine its ok as long as you have decent airflow over the sticks.. your call on that one tho!

technically, where (On AM3) is the added strain placed when changing the memory from 2t to 1t? . . . is that the IMC or DIMMs? (or both)

First I've heard of B.E.M.P (Black Edition Memory Profile) :D

p.s: Gurusan did a quick core test with Battlefield BC2, nice! :)

zoomee: you gonna have to dig deep I think, your board is "utterly" brand new and as such will almost certainly require some fine-tuning . . . . I do believe there is an ASUS engineer out there right now working late Friday night getting some updated BIOS code going! :D

Obviously I'm not saying your hardware problem is down to a early BIOS but having used a few "release" boards in the past I can attest that a lot of teething problems appear to get sorted quite quickly!

i've tryed both 1t and 2t at 1600mhz 7-7-7-20 but both fail.

no im not using the B.E.M.P profile because when i load overdrive the B.E.M.P is locked out..

as for airflow, i have a 38cm side fan , 25cm front fan, 17cm top fan, 12cm rear fan, that should be fine, :D

mmm this is weird, now its ran for 4hours, 45minutes on blend without errors at 1600mhz 7-7-7-20 2t 1.75v.

tomorrow i'll run it for longer, hopefully 8hours+

Wayne: As I understand; 1t / 2t represents the "command rate" (CPC) of the RAM. CPC (set on the IMC, not the RAM) tells the IMC at how many 'cycle' intervals to send requests to the RAM. So at 1t it is sending requests every cycle and at 2t every other cycle.

1t can send requests more frequently than 2t which means when its working across multiple channels of RAM you will see a performance boost over 2t. Typically this performance mostly relates to the fact that the IMC can tell the RAM what to do faster, it doesn't change the speed that the RAM read/writes/executes the command at.

Gareth: One final thing you might try... I have been pouring over my own overclocking spreadsheets and when running 2.8ghz+ NB I found that although I would pass a prime-blend to pass an 6GB+ IBT I needed to up my NB voltage to 1.3v (that is actually NB not NB-CPU), note this is on a Crosshair III. You might want to bump yours a little and see if it helps.

i've tryed upping the NB voltage (not the CPU-NB) before to 1.2v from 1.1v but that didn't help, that was with 1600mhz 7-7-7-20 1.70v. i may try again upping the NB voltage to 1.2v and set the ran to 1600mhz 7-7-7-20 1.75v

at the moment im running prime95 again on blend.

Hey Wayne, cheers that stuff came this morning, made me happyyy. :D

I have 2 weeks of flat out uni, then 2 weeks off, so I'm hoping to carry on overclocking then and carry on trying to get 3.9ghz stable on a C2, and to find the highest clock it will hold for a superpi 1m run. I have done 4.0 and 4.020, tried 4.040 but it crashed when I ran SuperPi. I never experimented with an overclock NB either, just core and HT Link, so I'm going to try that and hopefully I can get 1m done in less than 17secs. :D

@Hindle - Seems to do the job for me mate - on stock settings my 965 is sitting at 40 Degrees C under full prime load.

I just did a quick test earlier @ 1.5v - 4.0Ghz was a defo no go (complete system crash when trying to run prime) but 3.8 primed for nearly two hours fine @ 1.42v (which is probably what I will settle for 24/7) before I stopped it.

Suppliers of my corsair memory say its not compatible with my board (even though its on the approved module list from asus!) - so come monday if I don't have any further joy I'll end up returning it for some dominator CAS8 modules which they claim are compatible.
