AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

I had some free time today before i went to work, unfortunately it wasn't 8 hours but it was over the 4 hours that wayne recomended as a minimum further back in the thread.

D'oh, guess which silly fool just learned that changing the RAM timings is more demanding on the CPU-NB? Oh blue screen of death, how I hate you...

9-9-9-24 @1600MHz seems much more acceptable though, maybe this is the penalty for buying the £20 cheaper "optimised for intel" memory. Damn financial temptation :(

Or is it more likely the command rate? Everyone else's screenshot is 2T, mine is on 1T and has been since I let the BIOS choose...

I've turned down my fans, the noise is now almost inaudible, while still being better than my T.R.U.E.

I'm working on a 12 hour blend at 1.475. I would have had it done, but I went out last night, and was busy this night lol.

The "darkside" is better, less rules to obide by like 8hours prime to prove your manliness lol.
Oh and my power states seem to have stopped working, they are turned on in the bios i just checked.

Cheers big wayne! Been playing around 2day, Hopefully when I get my CPU cooler sorted hopefully get some water cooling, silent overclock mmm :P I should hopefully be going for 3.8Ghz and stable to run all the time as long as I can keep the dam temps down.

I noticed that bad company 2 ran a lot smoother when CPU temp was around 47c then it slowly got higher to 53c and was running a little choppy in comparison. These chips do love the cold! As soon as I hit 57-58c stability goes out the window. You guys getting 4ghz stable on air or water?

Kurt

eddiew: - I had the same confusion with bank cycle time. See my thread here for a bit more info. I ended up by changing it from 40 to 24 ... just because. :D

Also upping your cpu-nb might help with stability. The nb should be at least 3 times the memory speed. e.g.

1600 speed = 800MHz

800 x 3 = 2400

So for 1600 memory you should have a cpu-nb of at least 2400.

I am hoping that this is what caused my errors early in clocking my chip but have not had a chance to test yet.

EDIT: as for command rate I do hear that 2T is better than 1T but I dont know if it is determined by the chip or what. I think gareth went though some of this stress so he probably has the knowledge.

Thanks eddyc, I'll give that a go if I get a few hours prime stability at 9-9-9-24-40 :) Will look at bumping my NB frequency too, didn't know it was supposed to be related to memory speed ^^;

From what I remember 1T is the faster setting... which is naturally the less stable xD

I cannot for the life of me get this memory to run 8-8-8-24-2T though, bombs out of prime within a minute :( Weird, I can do 9-9-9-24-1T without sign of trouble...

*edit*

Well here we go, NB at 2400, RAM at 9-9-9-24-24-1T... optimism abounds, so far when I've managed to bugger the memory timings it's been BSOD within a minute. New NB speed didn't get the magic 8s though, insta-fail. I shouldn't have been swayed by the low price/voltage of these DIMMs :(

Lol, I have no idea. It's probably all just a numbers game, and I must admit I'm not going to chase it again. Unless it doubled PC performance, I'd never get the time back that I spent optimising it :)

Thats pretty much the conclusion I came to about bank cycle times! If its easy to do then why not but its probably not worth working at it.

Having said that setting up the computer is possibly more fun than using it... :)

Pretty sure I am on 1T. I think it was just set to that automatically. My timings are on completely stock settings (apart from slightly undervolted) so nothing too exciting really. I might get round to them eventually but new cpu OC possibilities always seem to spring up!

This has been going on for 2 hours now..
Hmm..
I'm running with my fans on quiet, I.E, they're spinning 75% slower than they were previous.
Also at 1.5v...Temps are ironically around the same as they were when the fans were full whack, it's just quieter now.

I'm going to stop the test for a bit, play some mass effect and then go to 1.475. I hope to get another 12 hour prime stable with my tweaked settings.

Damn Martini you should put that chip up for sale, people might well pay better-than-new prices for something guaranteed to hit 4GHz without going nuts on temps :D
