AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

ewaf - nice one!

You certainly have the right approach. Maybe up the multi to 17 and see how it goes. 17 should be fine on stock voltages.

Prime for at least 8 hours. Good luck. :)

Also worth considering software such as AMD Overdrive or K10Stat to do your experimental overclocking - the advantage of these is they are applied when within windows, so should you go too far and crash, then you won't have any problems booting up, since your BIOS settings will be stock and stable :)

And touch wood... no reboots today! Yet. I had my idle state down to 600MHz, now back at the default 800. Not sure why it should be a problem, but since all my resets seemed to be related to dropping to idle, thought it was worth a try... Fingers crossed!

Hey guys,

Got another question or two. Well I have upped the multiplier to 17. Gonna prime95 it now. Should I turn off cool n quiet? Or just leave it on? If something is wrong and it doesnt like it, will my PC shut off or will there just be errors in prime95? Also I didn't look at what the stock multiplier was for the AMD Phenom II x2 555 BE, does anyone know? Just incase something goes wrong :)

Cheers again!

As i'm a total noob when it comes to overclocking, i thought i'd ask for a bit of advice.

I built my own PC last year, and have tried to overclock it a little, but the problem is i've never known if i've actually done it correct or not. First i sorted my ram speed, and got it to 1066mhz, then i increased my CPU multiplier, and increased the voltage from 1.3250v to 1.3500v. Is this correct or have i mucked it up?

Also i'm going to post some CPU-Z screenshots. plus my PC specs are in my sig.

Any advice would be great.. esp if i can get my speed to 3.5ghz

Ewaf; if you're overclocking by multiplier, then there should be no need to turn off CnQ. What it does is lower that multiplier to lower levels, when the PC is idle, but your overclock is only modifying the top state and will not affect these "p-states" :) And you can always recover your default multiplier with the "auto" setting in BIOS ^^

Gilbert; looks like you've done exactly the right thing. You've got the BE processor so you can overclock on multiplier alone as you seem to have done. 3.5 is a pretty easy speed to achieve with a 3.2 stock processor, though you might need a tad more voltage (entirely depends on luck) :)

Assuming you've now got it running at a higher speed, best thing to do is run a Prime95 blend test. Pay close attention for the first half hour, watch the temperatures, if it's pushing towards 60 degrees STOP the test. Otherwise, let it run for around 8-12 hours. If it gets that far without an error, result; overclock successful :)

Cheers eddie,

Looks like a got a stable 3.6hgz now. Under prime95 full load its at 49c. I think I am happy with a 3.6ghz now. I mean, its a dual core processor and I have unlocked and overclocked it to a 3.6ghz quad core so I think I got a bargain there ;)

Might push it more but is 49c abit dodgy yet? I really don't know. Also with summer coming fast now and my bedroom getting really hot in the daytime I don't wanna risk it.

Cheers

Evening all got a couple of quick fire questions, can you use k10stat to change the cpu freq in windows instead of restarting everytime u want to change? Im currently testing for 3.7ghz with 1.43v and all seems ok after an hour of prime, i have set my LLC in the bios to 9% and have found it to stop my vcore dropping to lows of 1.35 while under load, the voltage is steady at 1.42-1.44 under load but does seem to spike to 1.5 then drop back again which is worrying me a little, cpu temp is showing 45c max and motherboard temp/nb temp is showing 30c

How am i doing?

Martini1991. thanks mate. i'm still trying to get 1600mhz stable for 24/7. one day prime95 does 10hours+ fine and other day its unstable.... stupid ram lol...

I've been trying all day to get my Phenom II x3 720 be CPU upto 3.5ghz, and after reading Dolk's Guide to the Phenom II. He was saying you have to change the CPU-NB when increasing the CPU multiplier.

Any time i try to do anything to the NB, my PC won't post, until i put it back on auto.

If i want to reach 3.5ghz or higher, do i only have to increase the multiplier, and up the vcore, or do i have to be messing around with the the CPU-NB and the HTT which is currently at 2000mhz stock.

Sorry if i'm not making any sense, but this is all new to me tbh.

Gilbert - if you are increasing the cpu-nb you may have to increase the cpu-nb voltage to keep it stable. Most people seem to be able to get 2400 or 2600mhz stable on the cpu-nb.

To be honest I would probably leave the cpu-nb on auto for now. Get your clock speed up and stable then you can start fiddling with the other bits. You may find that once you have upped the cpu-nb you can get a little higher on the cpu speed but maybe not...

Also sorry if people always ask you this but did you ever try unlocking your 720? I hear they generally have a pretty good chance of unlocking.
