AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

I have only increased my clock speed by 1mhz. Do pretty much all my OCing on the multi so reckon it is worth giving it a go.

I think C1E is when the processor turns off (sleeps) when it is idle to save even more power. Info here.

Reckon I will give them both a go and just see.

Hello Guys! . . . sorry been away from thread a few days, lots and lots of good results, thanks for all the good contributions and I hope you all still have some timne to get some gaming and other stuff done. I am interested to know what games some of you have been playing, GPU and what res? . . . I'm also interested to know what systems you has before these AMD® Phenom™ II's . . . also can we have a little bit of a Star-Wars theme in one or two result screens please (if you can squeeze it in of course!)

eddyc
Really good result there, lovely triple core @ 3.8GHz with over 8 hours of prime on the clock, great stuff and great screenie! . . . in fact that has to be Screen Of The Day!! :D

puma luke
Nice start there, good results and good stability testing too, keep it up and can you lob an extra copy of CPU-z showing the Memory tab in your screenies please! ;) . . . also you seem to have some uneeded [/IMG] code around your images? . . . did you try an unlock yet? :D

bigjimmyauk
Your a crazy man but I like you! :D . . . those temps are brillliant . . . 43°C full load! . . . . credit to you and credit to a PushPullBaram! :p . . . I think some experiementation is in order to work out a good CPU/CPU-NB/HTT combo, I found that the CPU-NB boost was quite good, I suppose people need to do some testing . . . How is the 3.9GHz stability coming along?

Muel
Haha, I'm not sure if a leaderboard would make much sense because . . . your all #1 :) . . . just make sure you get a top clock from your chip because the other guys want to make your flagship look bad . . Also is SuperPI for Intel® chips or AMD® chips? . . . I thought it's an Intel® Promotional tool? . . . anyway happy clocking ya lucky so & so! :D

buttkinz
Wow that looks great, a nice unlock, a nice clock, a decent pair of boobzillas on the desktop! :p . . . . don't forget to include your name on the screenie and perhaps make it just a tad bigger is you can, keep clocking! :)

SMAndy
Give the chip some juice and get that CPU-Multi jacked, may be easier to clock one thing at a time instead of a rumble in the jungle, look foward to your screenies! :)

joewm18
70°C load is ridiculous!!! . . . are you overclocking many things at once btw? . . . or did you clock things up one at a time? . . . if you newish? I'd leave pretty much everything on [Auto] and work out your processors clock first . . I expect good things!

Damien
Welcome and nice start to your clock! . . . that system musy fly!! good screenie too, whack open another CPU-z so we can see your [mem] tab and NB settings please, also don't forget to include your name in the screenshot somewhere please! :D

Martini1991
Ah Welcome Deneb Master, May the force be with you! . . . now where is your screenie please! :p

Si Lad
Hello there, nice result there man and great screenie, I'd say once you max that chip your ready to crank the CPU-NB a bit! :)

timmy222
That looks sweet man! . . . Callisto in the house!, nice screenie, bit more apps in view would be great and dont forget your name on the screenie! ;)

Skillmister
Welcome, I'm jealous! . . you bought a dual core and now you have a quad core . . . hmmm happy camper no doubt! :D . . . P.S the ThermoLab Baram is worth every single penny and fits fine in an Antec 300!

Nice one Wayne, would there be a decent increase over my stock cooler even if i run it passive?

At dual i max 40 degrees so i reckon quad around 50 but bringing that down a bit would be nice so i can give OC'ing a go :D

edit: also is the baram easy to fit and does it require taking the motherboard out?

Ha ha fools

I have picked up a new pants cpu cooler and will post my champion temps tonight.:D
Not saying what it is you may want to stone me.
I can see this ending in tears lol.:(

I upped it to 3.9 and it was running ok and ran the chess benchmark and then upped it 4.0. It crashed while running chess benchmark. Stock voltages still.
I then upped the cpu voltage and rebooted and ran the chess benchmark it got further through and crashed again.
I then upped the NB voltage and tried again... Success. Dont know how stable it is. Will run a game of dod:source later. That always gives me a good indication.
Also I have upped the RAM to 1600 from 1333.

Here's my first screen, I've had it at 3.8 and 4.0 by just adjusting the multi and very small bus speed increases but temps and stability above 3.8 aren't that good.

So i changed my approach to see how changing bus speeds affects things. Getting good results with a 250 bus speed, allowing the RAM to still run at default mhz. RAM seems fine running at 8:8:8:22 (from 9:9:9:24 stock) but haven't tested much further on this. Anything above a 15.5 multi at this bus speed needs too much voltage for stability for me to test at the moment due to temps, but have a 2nd fan for my Baram and a new case coming tomorrow so will start pushing for 4ghz and above.

If your getting 40°C load with X2 and you reckon you would reach 50°C load with X4 then I imagine the Baram would knock 15°C-20°C off that *if* used with a fan. You can also use the Baram passive but it won't let you knock out the really big clocks . . . I started iff using mine passive (as seen in the pic above) but eventually hit some stability issues past about 3.4GHz . . .slapped a basic Akasa 4-pin smart-fan and knocked 20°C off the load temps! . . . I think the Baram is easy to fit but it does need the motherboard to be removed, no problem for you as you know the little effort will be worth it! :D

timmy222
Ok, what pants cpu cooler did you get then? :o

Uriel
I didn't know you could monitor CPU-NB voltage? . . .cool! :) . . . I wonder is that motherboard dependant? . . . and what board are you using again?

Si Lad
That's a great result, good to see you making small adjustments that lead to improved stability, I'm impressed, I wonder if you will be the first to publish a prime stable 4GHz quad, I'd love to have a go on that system I bet it must really fly. Gaming is a great stability test too for those that hate blending. I am wondering how your load temps are?

Welcome and great first result and great screenie! :) . . . don't forget to include your name in your images please, keep clocking!

The 50 is an estimate judging by what people say it increases by when unlocked, so im not sure how accurate that is.. As for the Baram, with a fan that sounds really impressive, fan seems pretty cheap so thats good for me (student budget D: ) Removing motherboard isnt a problem, will give me some motivation to try tidy up the huge mess of wires aswell :p
Very tempted now, would be happy to get a 3.5GHz+ OC out of it, doing a lot of 3D work so any cut down on rendering times is a big plus.

Skillmister

If you settle on a lesser overclock for day to day runnings then I think the *passive* Baram will suffice! . . . It's one of the best heatsinks I've used and reminds me a lot of the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme but with a smooth/flat mirrored base! . . . it's total overkill on a AMD® Athlon™ II even when overclocked (3.6GHz @ 34°C) but the Deneb cores L3 cache seems to kick out big heat, I think the level 3 cache just needs proper cooling and the Baram will do just that . . . I agree £30 is a big chunk of change but you should get a fair bit of use out of it and should last years! :D

Right then, sounds good! Think i'll go for the passive, see how well that works and then decide how much im going to overclock it. Will be my first OC so i cant see me getting it high for a while. Thanks a lot for the help, might have some results to put up here next week :D

I can't monitor CPU NB voltage either. Would be handy if you could though. I've seen some screenshots of a few Asus boards using the in-house software that seem to allow it though.

I'm using a Jetway HA08 Combo and CPU-NB voltage is set using a + or - system that lets you add or drop in 50mv steps. It goes up to +/- 350mv. I emailed jetway this afternoon to find out if that could be translated into any kind of absolute figures.

When I thought my chip was no good a while back, I went on a suicidal headroom seeking mission. CPU-NB was set to max. I actually found I could stabilise my RAM @ DDR2 800 @ 300 FSB on higher settings. The recommended CPU-NB voltage on the Athlon X2 5000+ 45nm (i.e. locked Phenom FX-5000) is 1.4, which is really high compared to the other Denebs (I think default on the 940 is 1.175). Maybe that's why I was having stability problems after the unlock. Perhaps the board just wasn't setting the CPU-NB voltage high enough. They also recommend an operating temperature over 70°C, much higher than the true Phenom IIs. That's with the L3 cache disabled though.

I reckon the IMS / L3 cache actually kicks out quite a bit of heat and is heat sensitive. I know mine gets unstable over about 60° if the NB is clocked at around normal Phenom II levels (1800-2000).

Strange

I can run 3d mark 06, super pi, and i just ran the fur benchmark also stability tester, hot cpu, cpu stab test plus any game but it i dare to try and run prime 95 my pc blats out.
Infact I can say i have never had any luck with that prime 95.

Nuts i feel stupid prime 95 is on test 10 and still going.
Prehaps the poo poo cpu cooler I got was just the ticket lol.
