AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

4GHz is hard to get unless you get lucky with your CPU VID.

But i'd go 955 BE any day, the unlocked multi will save a ton of hassle.
 
Any idiot proof guides/settings I can try? mine seems to be unstable even at default clocks! I have raised the multi but it fails on anything over stock. Temps do not exceed 40C when running 4 instances of prime at stock clocks.

computer is:
X4 955BE C3 1.35VID
Asus M4A89GTD PRO USB3
4 GB of low voltage dual channel OCZ.

Computer sometimes doesn't even boot up at stock clocks, fans just spin faster then slower then nothing! Need some help as I'm thinking of ditching and going back to my E6600 :(
 
Hey Xez

Ideally you should aim to get everything fully stable at stock first - no point overclocking if our running on dodgy grounds anyway mate. I guarantee its more than likely your memory settings - manually set the BIOS to the settings your RAM is rated to run at ;)
 
Done some research and it seems i'm not the only person to be having these issues! Everytime it boots from cold it also fails, updated the bios and it's still the same :(

Do you have q-fan enabled? i've had some problems with my system refusing to boot after this was enabled and had to reset bios a couple of times. I've stopped using it now as it was just causing problems, never had any problems with it in the past though so is quite strange and took a while to figure out what was causing it.
 
Just purchased a new build for myself, nothing to drastically different, but i'm using a Corsair h50 cooler, 890GX Gigabyte motherboard, Corsair Dominator RAM and a 965 processor with a Sapphire 5970 OC as my current computer is moving to my brothers room and his computer is replacing the 6 year old computer downstairs. I didn't want anything too different from the 955, but i wanted a cpu that was slightly better and could get to 4GHz with this setup better than a 955, so i'll post my results once i get my components and once i've overclocked it to 4GHz.

Yep I've also disabled this along with the crappy Express Gate :p
 
Xez I'm also having problems getting mine stable tried for 3.6 and under prime core 2 failed and latter got a BSOD, even at stock it doesn't seem stable although the temps seem quite high despite me reseating the HSF.

edit, reason for my instability would seem to be the RAM, it just failed memtest. RMA time it seems, :(

What Ram are you using?

Mine doesn't even boot up the first time, this is with default reg settings. When i do get it to boot up it says overclock failed when its at default :p

Just downloaded the latest memtest and it picks errors up now. Looks like it's the memory at fault :(
