AMD® Phenom™ II Overclocking Thread

finally got some time to play with my new toy, been away on training all week.

so far, temps are killing me on my mugen, this chip can do much more but i see thermal throttling happening but cant do much bar maybe looking at a h50 but unsure how much i would drop in temps and i have a ambient of 23-25 so that doesnt help.

EDIT: Phenom II 550 @ 4 cores and 3.8Ghz, memory at 800 8-8-8-24. I have not upped the NB yet, still testing clock speed :)

Right so I've had a little venture into the bios and come back with a few questions.

What is?
1)CPU Over Voltage - I assume it's just the general Volts to CPU but is this the stock value plus "whatever I overvolt" or is the value I set there the voltage overall.

2)HT Config - Frequency, Width and again Overvolt.

3)Chipset Over Volt.

4)What is the max values I want to set these at?

I've tried using the AMD Overdrive, [email protected] but reboots after 10 seconds of prime, although fine at [email protected] for 30 mins, temps where 48° Max on stock cooler.
 
I only have a screen of 20 IBT passes at maximum for 4GHZ.
When I get home, on the 19th, I'm setting up my WC CPU loop, should be able to get an 8 hour 4.1GHZ screenie.

How do you feel! :D . . . my goodness you certainly got lucky there, the AMD® Phenom™ II 550 BE does seem like a really great option for *lucky* people . . . good to see 1:29mins of Prime there, is that Blend test or Small FFTs? . . . I wondered if it possible to make your screenies just a little bigger or clump the windows together a bit more as the details on the screen are a bit hard to read, also don't forget to include your name in the screenshots somewhere . . .happy clocking you lucky so and so! :)

CPU Over Voltage control on your board = Petrol for the CPU, HT Config is a multi for HT, default is 2000 (10x200) but you can go as low as 1200 (6x200), the first figure in those examples is the HT muti, the second figure is your HT Ref.Clock . . . at the moment you don't need to worry about the HT multi and can leave it at default x10 but once you overclock gets a bit more advanced and you begin to raise the HT Ref.Clock above default 200MHz you may find you need to drop the HT multi . . . i.e if you raised your HT Ref.Clock to 250MHz with the HT link at default x10 then your HT link is running at 2.5GHz (10x250) which may or may not cause a problem but dropping the HT multi to x8 would take the strain from it as it would now be running at 2GHz (8x250) . . . .don't worry too much about it and the Width, Overvolt for the moment! :) . . . . AMD Overdrive is a really neat tool and highly recommended for the learner, I used it for nearly a month to do some basic clocking but found eventually I got better results using the BIOS. Give yourself plenty of time and do things at your own speed, don;t try to follow the pace of some of the other guys here as they have probably been doing it longer than you . . . . the speed will come, consider yourself a juggernaut just slowly starting but given enough time will build up speed and become an unstoppable force! :cool:

I followed Gareth's thread which you contributed too, I'm dying to see an 8-hour Prime Blend at 4GHz from the people who have been clocking these chips for a couple of months, IBT is good still and that nice to see also but an 8-hour Prime would be *special*, look forward to your results and any pictures you have of your watercooled system!! :)

I'm gonna do my level best to make this a fun thread and I hope you guys (& girls ) enjoy!

If any of you have Photoshop installed it would be great if you added your name and a little bling to the screeny, if not then try to make sure your name is in the image somewhere (even a .txt document)

Can I also suggest that in an effort to make the thread easier to read that we use quotes as little as possible, especially if your answering a post directly above yours! (CAT-THE-FIFTH:p) . . . if you do need to quote then I would love you to death if you edited them down a bit (selective quote!) . . . I'm so sorry if this seems like nit-picking but you would be surprised how much easier a thread is too read without excessive quoting . . .

I'm also gonna be *lifting* some peoples screenshots out and using them to fill the "Screen Of The Day!" section in post #2 . . . Also don't forget some people will be *viewing* using a laptop so keep the image dimensions reasonable and fill the space with as much useful stuff as possible (temps, stability, Memory timings etc) . . .

Apart from that do your best to produce nicer results than the other OcUk guys working down the hall in the Intel® Core™ i3 lab! :D

Thanks for the reply again Big.Wayne, as we have the same board I was wondering if you could check your AMD Overdrive CPU Voltage to the CPU-Z readout as mine differs somewhat.

Mine read as the following,

AMD - 1.40 - 1.45 - 1.475 - 1.50 - 1.525 - 1.55
CPUZ - 1.32 - 1.37 - 1.392 - 1.42 - 1.456 - 1.472

Anyway I've upped the just the Multi to [email protected](AMD)
and its stable on Prime for 30 mins (Didn't fail just stopped) although at 60°.

So is 60° about right for 1.525 or would it be higher, using the stock still.

I've also noticed in the BIOS my chip is stated as revision C2, although again CPUZ reads C3, so anybody with a suspected C3 955 could you check this in your BIOS please?

Hi Wayne, haha mate not luck just a proven clocker, bought it second knowing it will do really well.

Will be doing my prime run today once im happy with where its going, got the NB up to 2600Mhz without any increase in volts, will try 2800Mhz and settle on that.

I really want to see 4Ghz stable so might switch the heating off lol!

Test prime run was @ blend.

Just done my chess and superpi benchmarks.

Not had time to do the stock ones but here they are including all my fiddling:

All I have changed since my last screen grab was to increase the HT Link Frequency to 2600Mhz.
 
A quick note to Big.Wayne - is it possible that another thread for X2 550BE and X2 555BE unlocking results be started too??

At the very least could we have a list of this somewhere in the thread??

It would be interesting to see what percentage of X2 550BE and X2 555BE processors unlock to triple and quad cores.
 
Phenom II X2 555 black edition.

Unlocked to 4 cores.

Overclocked to 3.95ghz at 1.51v, 1 hour OCCT stable (not tested beyond that).
 
been back to the books today to research ACC and the smaller options in the bios, still a work in progress but will keep going

Your welcome! :) . . . I don't have AMD Overdrive but I would say the vCore figure you are seeing in CPU-z is a good figure to work with . . . I am amazed at the speed you are working, from a standing start your at 3.8GHz already! (19x200) 1.525vCore 60°C full load :D . . . I would get a Prime95 Blend test running on that for as many hours as you can (maybe while you sleep?) and see just how robust that clock is . . . I'd say your temps are fairly high now for continued overclocking but we can test that theory out soon enough, look forward to your stabilty screens! :cool:

Hellooo! :) . . . I think there have been one or two *unlocking* threads made but none have endured . . . I think it's a great idea for someone to create and maintain an new thread for unlocking hints & tips and I think you just nominated yourself for the job! :p . . . It does seem like a lot of AMD® Phenom™ II X2 550 BE chips are unlocking well, and overclocking pretty well too, tempting, very tempting! :D

Whooooosh! . . . um holy cow! unlocked and 3.9GHz already! :eek: . . . May the force be with you heh! ;) . . . look forward to any screenies you can submit, Prime95 blend seems to pick up any problems quite quickly but OCCT screens are welcomed also, good luck . . . not that you need it! :cool:
 
Thermalright Ultra eXtreme with 2x 120mm fans for cooling . . . weeee how good is that, I expect *huge* results from you Meaker! :D

use cpuz monitor to get temps :)

for my screenie above just for reference, im upping each core in turn to find its max clock, so far core 0 and 3 are 4ghz stable after ibt and a bit of prime, core 1 is sticking around 3.9 but im going to keep going with the ACC settings to try and iron it out, will check core 4 after this. does anyone have a detailed write up on ACC, only place i can find them is from AMD themselves and they dont really go into detail about the different settings
 
Lovely results ~>Dg<~ . . . don't forget to include another CPU-z showing the [Mem] tab . . . also see if you can crop the screens down a tad to only include relevant infor and most importantly . . . . don't forget your name! :)

P.s: I'm still not sure if Super-PI is a good test to demonstrate these chips as that software is *optimised* for Intel® processors, can we come up with a better test to showcase these chips please? :cool:
