AMD R series 270X or the nVidia 660GTX?

Hi all,

I've decided to upgrade my current 6850HD card due to having money gifts this Christmas.

A friend introduced me to an interesting thread on hardware (which is certainly worth a read but it takes about 10-15 minutes reading). It goes into excellent detail about choices and why you should choose one over the other. Link to the forum thread (scroll down to the titled section "Video Cards").

Right straight to the point; due to budget of £150 maximum I've researched down to either the 660GTX or the new AMD R series 270X. The lower end 760GTX are out my price range; along with the higher end 680/690GTX cards.

I would be using the following games: Flight Simulator 9 (mainly), OMSI Bus Simulator, C&C Generals (and Zero Hour), Train Simulator 2013/2014, Euro Truck Simulator 2, LA Noire, GTA 5 and F1 2013 when I can afford it.

In my opinion from what I've read the specs of the R9 270X on paper are superior to the 660 but the reviews and benchmarks TO DATE say otherwise ... i.e. 660 beats the 270X by a few fps (5+). The 270X is currently cheaper than the 660 but only by a few pounds!

What are your recommendations in what I should purchase?

Thanks in advanced,
Pete

personally id reccomend an OC'd 270x with a branded cooler, the MSI gaming edition for example. either is an upgrade from a 6850 BUT id make sure that your processor isn't bottlenecking you.

I'm not worried about the processor bottlenecking me. If so I can always increase the clock speed (over clock) from it's factory speed. I don't tend to like overclocking them but if I have I have to lol.

What's your view on the AMD issue mentioned in that thread about shaders?

Any chance you'd be interested in checking the second hand market? Might be able to scrape to an HD7950 or GTX670 which would walk all over both of those.
