Hi all,

Just a quick question. When this series of cards are released is it likely to be a whole new architecture throughout the range or is it simply likely to be yet another set of re-hashed cards with only the top end 390x getting something new like the 290x did with Hawaii? I also read somewhere that the r7 260x also had something new.

No body knows, the chances are we will not see a 390X until 20nm is rolled out, early to mid 2015.

I only ask really as I don't want to upgrade at some point in the near future to find 6 months later a whole new hopefully better architecture has been released.

Currently my 7850 although only 1gb runs what I need as I'm not wanting anything over 1080p. But as my ps3 gets older and ps4 takes over I'm looking to do more gaming on the pc instead as I have a good base system just not a brilliant gpu and I know sinking the money into a good gpu like the 280x is better value for money than buying a ps4.

lies we all know!
they might aswell call it the nvidia nut kicker^^;

lol....

The 280 is practically a 280X and only £150 http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-019-VX

If you think the performance of your 1GB 7850 is good enough for 1080P the 280 will put you flat on your back and see you right for the next few years.

You can get an ex mining rig 280x for peanuts, and depending on whether the fans were at 100% or not, there are virtually no issues to be had (some msi cards had issues with the fan bearings).

If 16nm really will tape out by the end of the year then that puts AMD in a tight spot. They can stick it out with tweaks to TSMC 28nm or put out some token efforts on GF's (supposedly superior) process then come back strong with Pirate Islands 390X for 2015.

Or they could call these sub-par tweaks the 390X and quickly replace them with 400 series in 2015, making the 300 series like the 6000s.

A 290x that is 2 months old can be had for 180 or possibly less. So would I wait a year if I wanted a boost now. Prob not. On the main question, AMD as discussed have some massive challenges ahead. Let's hope they resolve them and deliver a competitive part.
