AMD Radeon HD 6870 Reference Design * First Pics *

We'll have to see whether these rumours are true but *if* AMD is releasing the 6870 at the same performance level as the 5870 then it *is* deceptive; it would be no different than what nVidia has been doing and which everyone has rightly criticised. Obviously the price is the most important factor - as names aren't really important to anyone that actually researches their purchases - but I don't want to see AMD sink to the dirty tactics that nVidia uses.

Its totally different to what nvidia have been doing as nv have been rebranding the same card over and over for around 3 years. The 6870 is not even the same card as the 5870 which is one difference. Then you have to wait and see what the price is going to be. If you get 5870 matching performance for £200 then in my opinion its not such a bad thing. The only thing that is a little dodgy is some people may not know its not an upgrade from the 5870 but for me the majority of people with top end cards will know the difference. Anyone that has bought a 5870 must have the reasoning to look into a card that cost less than the one they have in there machine.

Its a little dodgy but in no way does it compare to taking a label from a 8800gt and sticking it on a 9800gt so they can charge more and then to basically do the same again with another name. The 6870 card if it happens to be called that is a new design so nothing like nv's behavour.

So they are going to pull n Nvidia with the 5770 then by the looks of that chart. just re-release the same card as a 6770.
Naughty , naughty :p

I thought amd might do this after i seen the gts450 reviews. Nvidia have not given amd any reason to bring out a new card at this price point.

I won't believe it until amd release the cards though. This slide could have been made by anybody as has been said in other forums.

If this does happen amd will have to price it a lot lower than it is now though as the gtx460 768 at its current price is a much better deal.

the last two weeks or so seem to have really turned things around. As a result, im getting rather confused as to whats what, so im gonna wait until release day to see what chip end up under what name and at what price. Then ill decide whether AMD's pulling a fast one or not.

Same.

I am just going to wait and see what they really look like and how much performance they churn out :D

No, I don't think that it is. The architecture will like be largely the same - despite claims it's been complete reworked - and if the performance is the same then they've just artificially inflated the model number in order to deceive people. We're not talking about the 5xxx versus the 4xxx, as that was going from DX10.1 to DX11.

Don't get me wrong, nVidia are been much more persistent with their deception but *if* this is true then it's a bad move for AMD. They have a good product and there's simply no need to do this. Considering their recent track history I'm not going to write them off until I see the final products, as this is all speculation at the moment - afterall, both the 4xxx and 5xxx were very good products.

lol at the people saying ati are being underhanded with a *potential* renaming structure

it's hardly like nv didn't do it before is it? it's business, and whether they're trying to make their premium products look a little better or just to confuse, who honestly cares? we're all internet-savvy enough to work it out, and if the nooby purple shirt shoppers choose to not do a tiny bit of research, boobs to them tbh

personally i have no problem with any renumbering of new cores( Bart's, Cayman, Antilles) it may seem a bit daft to have the 6870 slower then the 5870 assuming that it will be ( i cant see it being faster at all) but certainly not what i would call underhand.

but according to that chart and of course that is all we have to go on, they intend to rename the 5770 to the 6770 and likewise the 5750-6750, now that is exactly what Nvidia did with the 8800gt to 9800gt and again with the 9800gtx+ to gts250. defiantly underhand and misleading to the customer.

^^ if them results are legit, the 6870 is well slower than a 5870 in vantage.

The first is "strong" HD6870

I,m really not getting the point of the New Amd cards. They dont add anything extra over the current cards, DX 11 etc Which are more than capable of playing the latest games at high resouloutions etc... Am i missing something as i,m just not seeing the point of the 6x other than for the benchmark geeks to say look my Radeon is quicker than your Nvidia etc etc...

lower power and less heat as well as slight perfromance increases (speculation) is what they will bring, if i am wrong i am sure someone on here will correct us moogley.
