We'll have to see whether these rumours are true but *if* AMD is releasing the 6870 at the same performance level as the 5870 then it *is* deceptive; it would be no different than what nVidia has been doing and which everyone has rightly criticised. Obviously the price is the most important factor - as names aren't really important to anyone that actually researches their purchases - but I don't want to see AMD sink to the dirty tactics that nVidia uses.
Its totally different to what nvidia have been doing as nv have been rebranding the same card over and over for around 3 years. The 6870 is not even the same card as the 5870 which is one difference. Then you have to wait and see what the price is going to be. If you get 5870 matching performance for £200 then in my opinion its not such a bad thing. The only thing that is a little dodgy is some people may not know its not an upgrade from the 5870 but for me the majority of people with top end cards will know the difference. Anyone that has bought a 5870 must have the reasoning to look into a card that cost less than the one they have in there machine.
Its a little dodgy but in no way does it compare to taking a label from a 8800gt and sticking it on a 9800gt so they can charge more and then to basically do the same again with another name. The 6870 card if it happens to be called that is a new design so nothing like nv's behavour.
