AMD Radeon R9 290X Causes Computer to Restart

Hello,

Recently I bought an AMD R9 290X to replace an older card.

The issue that I am having is that the new graphics card is causing my computer to randomly restart.

I could only play a game for a minute or two before the computer restarted. Also the computer would restart when I was on the desktop sometimes.

The Event Viewer shows a 'kernel error 41'.

Computer Specifications:

AMD FX-8150
Asus MSA78L-M (BIOS are up to date)
Sapphire AMD Radeon R9 290X (Bought from Overclockers last week)
16GB RAM
1TB HDD
Corsair CX750 PSU

I don't know what to do!

Any help would be much appreciated!

Hi sadmanonatrain,

Sorry to hear of the issue you're having.

Do you have another pc you could try the graphics card in or perhaps a spare power supply? I have a sneaky feeling your power supply might be the cause of the problems.

Seems like a PSU issue to me. Try stressing the PSU out with furmark or something, and see if the problem happens there and then. Also, are you using a surge protector ? Those can sometimes be faulty and cause problems when they "think" there is a surge.

Never ever ever use or recommend furmark as it has done more damage to computers than the millennium bug.

Do your computer a favour and don't use Furmark.

From the title it sounds like a PSU issue, but a 750W should be ok. How old is the PSU and is it rated '80+'?

How hot does your PSU get? These arnt the best PSU's seems quite likely its overheating and shutting down.Is it mounted face down sucking air from the outside in to keep cool?

I ran a 280x+oc'ed I5 syetm off a cx600m,and it got stupidly hot under load, although you have a higher Wattage model your components draw a lot more power.

Edit: Also that mobo has non heatsinked VRMS,you really shouldnt be running an 8 core FX on it tbh,a 290x dumps a lot of heat into a case aswell, could be the mobo auto shutting down due to VRMS overheating.

Before I switched the PCIe clock speed to 150 I tried the following and the resetting persisted:

Tried the old graphics card: no problems
Tried two different power supplies: random resets
I'm using a dedicated 8 pin and 6 pin power cables for the graphics card: random resets
