*** AMD Radeon R9 290X Reviews Thread ***

Great card at a great price, thank you AMD for sensible pricing on a card declared faster than a titan, by no other than PCP!

With a shader count 36% higher than the previous single-GPU flagship offering from the Radeon line, AMD was able to put enough horsepower into the R9 290X to push past both the GeForce GTX 780 and GTX Titan graphics cards in enough of our game tests to declare it the fastest single GPU card for PC gaming.

For those watching the TTL video, he whinges about the stock cooler for 10 mins before getting to the review.

I am very impressed with AMD, Great price and none of the reviews I have read so far mentioned any coil whine ( correct me if Im wrong ). I am so glad I didn't get a 7990( Im sensitive to noises like coil whine).

Reading the [H], here is some VERY interesting info about Uber mode / throttling:

This testing shows that going higher than the 55% fan cap employed by uber mode can make a difference, depending on the games. Far Cry 3 did not get a big jump from 40% to 55% fan, but by allowing the fan to go up higher (and in this case it maxed out at 65%) the performance jumped way up in this game. This game was being held back quite a bit by the fan speed and temperature. The true potential of the R9 290X was not exposed with the low fan caps. This is why we think "Uber Mode" should just unlock the fan completely, in our opinion. We'll talk about that more in the conclusion.

By manually setting a fan cap of 100% (with it only spinning up to 65%) they got min fps to go up from 34 to 38.

I am happy with the price but dissapointed with the performance of the cooler going to cancel and wait for aftermarket coolers as don't have a watercooling setup :(

Unless you're really in need of one now or you're water-cooling these mofo's you're best to wait for the aftermarket coolers. Given the price and performance unless the 780ti kills the Titan, there's really nothing to prevent you from being patient.
