Essex innit!
GeForce GTX 880M is in a huge trouble. Soon, a new competitor will emerge — AMD Radeon R9 M295X, powered by Tonga graphics processing unit.

AMD Radeon R9 M295X specifications
Some fresh leaks have been discovered by one of our most dedicated readers, Cloudfire. What he discovered are the specs of the upcoming Tonga GPU, which as you know is being slowly being prepared by AMD. Tonga is based on the same GCN architecture known from Hawaii or Bonaire. Tonga is actually a Tahiti replacement, but since it’s much more power efficient, AMD has decided to replace Pitcairn/Curacao/Neptune with something fresh.

Tonga has the same amount of Compute Units as Tahiti. Assuming it has the same SP layout as other Volcanic Islands GPUs, then we should expect 2048 unified cores. The number of TMUs and ROPs is debatable at this point, as we don’t know if mobile Tonga will have the same numbers as desktop variant. The best scenario is 128 TMUs and 32 ROPs respectively. This would be the exact same chip as Tahiti in terms of specs, but not in terms of the interface. Tonga has 256-bit wide memory bus, which is more or less a standard for mobile graphics processors.

According to leaked specs, the maximum core clock should not exceed 800 MHz. Of course, that would be the boost clock. AMD Radeon R9 M295X would feature 4GB GDDR5, but it does not mean we won’t be seeing 8GB variants too. This is undoubtedly the biggest advantage of GTX 880M right now, so it would be silly if AMD had no such option being prepared.

This should be a GCN 1.1 part and have TrueAudio support.

EDIT

Woah new competitor for the 780TI!!

Just sold my 7970, should I wait to upgrade??

If you insist one one card only, then it might be worth it if you want the fastest card you can get. Or a 780TI... i doubt this new card will be much faster than a 780TI, just enough to pip it in all the games/benchmarks except the ones that favour Nvidia heavily.

Hmmm.....I was considering a reference 290 due to my mATX and the possibility of running dual cards, but they run far too hot for my liking. This pushing me to the 780, but its on par with the 290 with the 290 being cheaper. I would love to have a 780Ti, but I'm not sure how long I could be without a card while I save :confused:

Preferably a card with a half decent heatsink if they bring out something new, about time amd got their thumb out of their asses when it comes to their heatsinks.

Read the bottom part Si. New 780TI competitor coming supposedly.

Doing the whole 'GHZ Edition' thing again by the looks of it. Nudge stock volts up along with core clock = 'new chip'

Though perhaps if the process has matured enough AMD have managed to either keep it cooler or pull a bit more on the core clock for the stock voltage.

Maybe AMD just got jelly that Nvidia have managed to blag 5 cards out of GK110 but AMD have only managed 3 from Hawaii, wanted to join the **** take party. :p

Agreed!!

The reference designs need to be more effective and they really need to work on the generation of heat and power consumption. This is one thing driving me to the green team!

Who cares as long as it's cheaper than a titan black and performs better. :)

Tbh AMD would have to be fully extracting the urine to price it above a Titan Black. Who knows though, perhaps this new edition will cause some price drops in other areas like what happened with the 7970 GHZ release :)

Yea i doubt they would go head to head on pricing with nvidia/780ti as that probably won't sell them cards. So maybe it would come in priced similarly to the 290x and the rest of the range drop in price a little.

That would be nice!! I wouldn't have to go AMD again or splash out too much on the 780Ti :D

Those who have experienced many a launch, how is this likely to work in terms of coolers?

Would it be a repeat of the 290X launch - reference released then three months later AIB standard coolers, then another few months later the 'souped up' versions (Lightning, Matrix etc)?

Reason I ask is that I have my eye on a 290X Vapor-X but I'm wondering if it's likely I could get a 295X Vapor-X within weeks of an eventual 295X launch (rather than waiting another four to six months from there). I accept there would be a price premium of course.

Aaaaand... if answering the above would involve the consultation of a crystal ball... never mind then :p

Thanks.

That would be nice. If AMD beat the 780ti/Titan Black i would expect them to price it around a 780TI pricing, maybe undercut slightly or maybe price it slightly above.

Just my opinion, but i doubt we will see a reference 295X unless AMD have redesigned the reference cooler. AIB only.

So going from that article the possibility of a desktop R9 295x is pure guesswork on their part, the only thing they have any positive indication of is the R9 M295x which is a mobile part.

Not saying that it isn't going to happen but just mentioning it so you don't all get your hopes up based just on their guesswork.

Usually when a flagship gets a refresh its just newer revision chips/bios, the cooling and PCB's are generally left to AIB's. Usually making it a complete nightmare for anyone wanting to watercool in the process.
