AMD RDNA3 unveiling event

Or pay £100 less for more raster performance if you don't give a crap about RT... Right?..
  • Raster performance is a wash between the 7900 XTX and the 4080
  • 4080 RT performance is about 15% to 20% better on average.
  • Power consumption is lower on the 4080
  • 7900 XTX is smaller
  • 7900 XTX uses normal power cables
So pick either and be happy, or pick neither because they are joke prices and AMD and Nvidia need to find this out the hard way.

For those who care about their wallet, they would have grabbed a 6900 XT here for 650.
I got over RT pretty quickly with my RTX 3070 that could do it very well with DLSS.

Quiet or you'll wake them all.

Remember you need to consider the other benefits of ray tracing

- reduced wallet size
- Increased sexual prowess among your peers
- able to tell people you ray trace
- lights that make you think you're outside due to the immense realism

Ray Tracing = makes you think you are outside - a tech description I suppose. Just outside though?

The issue with Raytracing is that the best example is cyberpunk.. A game that was plagued with bugs and should have been completed by now by anyone who found it remotely interesting. For those who see cyberpunk as having unrealised potential and hope to revisit it, then you might aswell wait a few more generations until its performance is top drawer.

Spending £1600 quid to play cyberpunk and control is pretty hilarious.

Just to correct some people, saying the feature set is lacking because no DLSS. I've seen that mentioned a few times now. AMD uses FSR (and also RSR). This isn't lacking. Please stop saying this.

Sorry but for the record, it definitely is lacking, it is not green and it is not named Nvidia. /s

At the end of the day if you looked at the 4080 and thought **** off am I paying that then I imagine you'll be thinking the same with AMDs 7900 cards.
Indeed. I'd like a 7900XTX. But not at that price. Maybes I'll review it all again in 6 months.

650 for the 6900 XT was such a great deal. Thanks @Gibbo
I paid £850 for a Red Devil 6950 over a month ago and was going to send it back in the hope that the 7900xtx would be worth the £1k plus, turns out it was a wise choice to keep it and skip the new gen. At 1440p it's a no brainer. After selling my RTX 3070 for £420 it's a relatively cheap upgrade. Enjoy your 6900 xt.

I see you made a similar desicion, it was very hard to ignore the perf impact at 1440P, same res!

Same, hope it treats you well.

If the 7900XTX was in between the 4090 and 4080 as was expected the hanger's on to see reviews would now know for £120 you can also have very superior RT performance and equal raster, with a lower power draw and power spikes, the 7900XTX does make the 4080 look a lot better than it did as most expected the 7900XTX to be well in front of it in raster.

I think if the price difference was like it is in the USA, 1200 vs 1000 then the 7900xtx wouldn't be a bad deal as such at that point you have to pay 20% more for that RT performance, which lets be real while good isn't great, if we take Cyberpunk neither the 4080 or 7900xtx can run the game at 4k, with 20fps vs 30fps, sure the 4080 is 50% faster in RT, but 0 x 0 is sill 0. I wouldn't class either of them as playable frame rates. (disregarding DLSS of course) Of course that's an extreme example most games are playable on both the 7900xtx and 4080 with Ray Tracing. More so with FSR/DLSS should you wish. Sure it's better overall at raytracing but you have to pay 20% more for it.

The problem is the pricing in the UK

I think someone said earlier the 7900xtx is £1080 on OCUK, (I can't see prices yet) vs the 4080 at £1150 which puts the 4080 only 6.5% more, (9.5% more if it's priced at £1050) the percentage difference in price has a far lower value than the prices in the USA.

Would I pay 20% (based on the US pricing) more for RT? Hell no, you can Jog on until you fall over
Would I pay 6% (Possibly 9%) more for RT... well... now it becomes a more reasonable price ask for that extra performance.

Yeah now simply isn't the right time to buy any of the new cards expect maybe the 4090, I can see all the others requiring price cuts to actually sell in any meaningful amounts and AMD and Nvidia will need to start selling through their inventories at some point.
