AMD RDNA3 unveiling event

It's more disappointing not seeing the mid / lower tier sooner where most of the market is

Then they rob you blind at the mid and lower tier. I'm increasingly convinced you are better off just sitting a gen behind and snapping up "bargains" before the go EOL. They have had 2 really good deals on 6900XT's on here, a decent deal on a 6800XT which is not far off a 6900XT anyway, and if you shop around there's some reasonable deals to be had.

Just forget the upcoming gen because the prices for at least the first 18 months of it are ridiculous.

I'm rather set on the 7000 series cards unfortunately, as it'll more easily fit inside the power budget envelope of my existing PSU. Whilst the 6000 cards could be grabbed cheaper they risk pushing the PSU into shutdown points. Also, potentially 24GB VRAM would be useful in some stuff I do. Now I do recognise my case is more of a fringe one, and if I'm purchasing in general, I'd totally grab a current gen 6000 series instead.

Wow. I didn't know that, that's disappointing :(

Everyone knows there will be a 7950 at some point, but that's not the way amd or nvidia play the game, they position a card as being their top end, wait a while then produce a faster offering (that's usually not really that much faster, 10-15% or thereabouts). Been that way for a while now, more so on the part of nvidia as amd didn't have the resources to play that game much until just recently..

Unless they lead to a reduction in prices the xx50s tend to be of the squeezing last gasp out of card range kind of releases too late to really get anyone excited (unless as with the 6xxx series the non 50s were barely ever in stock and if they were they priced £200 above the nvidia equivalent)

It's hard to get excited when AMDs 900XT only matches Nvidias ##80 in raster especially when Nvidias 80 is really a 70 and should be priced no more than £650.

Even current AMD cards are about $100 overpriced for what they give, this is after all the holiday discounts... I won't name Nvidia because honestly they are like Apple, a toy for the rich...

I like this card, my 6800xt Merc has been a fantastic card.

Is the 7900xt the replacement for a 6800xt??

Sort of, yes and no. Yes in that it's a cut-down top-end chip, second from the top (at least initially). No in that its price is a lot closer to it's bigger brother than the 6800xt was to 6900xt. And there will almost certainly be a 7800xt based on a full-fat Navi 31, or a further cut-down Navi 33.

On a somewhat related note, any word on how AMD is disabling chiplets to cut down their chip versions i.e. will it be done physically or through software? Likely optimistic, but has there been any hypothosis of rx290/6800/465 GTX vanilla unmasking magic?

Thanks for this

So basically AMD have created a new tier, a bit like it's CPU range.

In fairness it depends on which tier your after. If you watch the lower end stuff a guy compared the 3060 with a 6700XT that he got for the same price. It destroyed it and shows the Apple part you mentioned can be squat all in some cases. You are simply being mugged for a brand name at that point.

6700xt is definitely one tier above the 3060, so it's not a fair comparison.

TBH on AMD land the 6600 and XT are about 50€ too much, the cards above at least 100€ over what they should be.

7800xt and 7700xt are n32.
N33 are whatever they decide.

The point was you said AMD are $100 overpriced when this clearly confirmed they are not..

Yeah I think if you compare the 6700XT to 3060ti and 3070 then that's fairer.

See point I was quoting. Both cards were the same price he was referring to prices not fair comparisons, just saying! ;)

What AMD have done is change the names 6900XT > 7900XTX and 6800XT > 7900XT.

A 7800XT wouldn't have looked good with a price jump from $650 > $900 but with Nvidia's joke shop pricing on the 4080 AMD have taken the opportunity to get creative with the naming and make a bit more dosh also.

You can bet your life that had the 4080 released for $750 then the 7900XT would have been called a 7800XT and released for $700.

We are at a bit of a crossroads with cards further down the stack now so do AMD make a 7800XT on N31 with 72 or more CU's or are they planning to use a weaksauce N32 die with just 60 CU's which would only deliver +15-20% more performance than a 6800XT roughly matching Nvidias poor looking 4070ti.

The XFX card is interesting because it looks like the backplate is designed to function as a heatsink instead of just being decorative like it is on most cards. The silver colour would go nicely in my case too. Have to wait and see how much it costs relative to the reference design.
