AMD RDNA3 unveiling event

What AMD have done is change the names 6900XT > 7900XTX and 6800XT > 7900XT.

A 7800XT wouldn't have looked good with a price jump from $650 > $900 but with Nvidia's joke shop pricing on the 4080 AMD have taken the opportunity to get creative with the naming and make a bit more dosh also.

You can bet your life that had the 4080 released for $750 then the 7900XT would have been called a 7800XT and released for $700.

We are at a bit of a crossroads with cards further down the stack now so do AMD make a 7800XT on N31 with 72 or more CU's or are they planning to use a weaksauce N32 die with just 60 CU's which would only deliver +15-20% more performance than a 6800XT roughly matching Nvidias poor looking 4070ti.

Yeh the 7900xt is defo named wrong and and overpriced when compared to the 7900xtx

I do wonder how close it will be to the 6900xt I think in some cases last gen cards will be a better than the 7900 xt.

With the xt model at least AMD have just done a Nvidia 4080 12gb just at a lower price

The XT should pound everything including 6950XT unless the hardware spec numbers are no longer logical, I probably cannot reveal spec but I will say the 7900 XT has more processors, bigger bus than the 6950 XT so one would think it will outperform in anything. Of course it is quite a lot more expensive than what a 6900/6950 can now be had for.

It will be around the same performance as a 4080 so about 30-35% better than a 6900XT although I still wouldn't pay £900 for a 4080 so won't be buying a 7900XT for that either.

Ah that's a typo on my part.

I meant to say last gen cards could be better value!

Good old mobile phone typing!

I do think it will/should be better but it's how much better will it be considering the deals that can now be had on the 6900s

I would be considering that new 6900 deal you posted but it unfortunately will likely expire before the 7900s are reviewed.

Although as your here... How's the exchange rate looking on the 7900 cards? xD

The point was you said AMD are $100 overpriced when this clearly confirmed they are not..

See point I was quoting. Both cards were the same price he was referring to prices not fair comparisons, just saying! ;)
If you think an x80 card should be anything more than $600 it's your opinion, in mine x600 = $200ish, X700= $300ish

Maybe two years on. But the msrp of the x700 was £450 iirc and I cannot seeing it getting any cheaper on the next gen if anything it will be a tad higher? In Italy I would assume euro is even worse for AIBs.

The XFX card is interesting because it looks like the backplate is designed to function as a heatsink instead of just being decorative like it is on most cards. The silver colour would go nicely in my case too. Have to wait and see how much it costs relative to the reference design.
I had few previous Merc cards and many things that looked metal on photos were actually plastic in them. Makes me wonder if they actually made it out of metal this time, or still lots of plastic.

The 7900XT, I'm pretty sure, already has (at least) a $100 price cut built into its launch price, ready to be dropped very quickly to $799 (or lower) should Nvidia decide to respond to positive reviews ( & sales) of the 79xx cards with a lower launch price on the 4070Ti than they otherwise would have.

On a somewhat related note, any word on how AMD is disabling chiplets to cut down their chip versions i.e. will it be done physically or through software? Likely optimistic, but has there been any hypothosis of rx290/6800/465 GTX vanilla unmasking magic?
Nothing has been confirmed but once the chips are out in the wild it soon will be. Typically all the big three all tend to laser/fuse off parts on higher end chips, you might get lucky on lower end models but don't hold your breath.

I can see that being the case.

The issue for me is that even though Gibbo has basically said the XT should be more powerful than the 6950xt. With the prices now essentially being around £700 for the 6900XT £900 for the 7900XT and £1000 for the 7900XTX. I can see the difference between the 7900XT and XTX being big enough to justify just paying the 100extra for the XTX but i don't see the difference in the 7900XT being big enough over the 6900XT to justify 200 more.

And this is assuming the prices translate 1 for 1 which we all know they wont with the 7900XT likely to be shy of the £1000 mark, so the value of the 7900XT simply isn't their in my view. Even with that $100 price cut baked in with us paying a preium i can see it being around £899 WITH the price cut.

We will see reviews Monday so that will clear things up at least.

In fairness by end of January the 6900/6950 XT's won't exist any more or be so few they will no doubt be around £800.
