I wonder if they they are pushing code for the steambox.

so far:
UVD : hardware video decode (using vdpau)
DPM : dynamic power management.

and this weekend
GL Interop : (very important for XBMC)
and now the info needed for surround sound.

my e350 APU is now running open source gfx drivers and playing video smoothly on XBMC, some files are glitchy (HD wmv's) but mostly completely usable.

It could be steam related but equally it could be that for fairly little effort and outlay that can attract thousands of Linux enthusiasts who would otherwise simply buy nvidia.

Maybe but they put very little effort into fglrx (their closed source drivers) over the years.

just glad i can move my PVR/media system over to a box with faster/bigger drives.

Since manufacturers will no doubt want to make APU based Steamboxes, AMD has a massive incentive to sort out its drivers finally. They have stated for a while that they've been working on the Linux drivers.

Certainly if the Valve Steambox itself uses an AMD GPU, the drivers will need to be at least as good as Windows by 2014.
