AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Finally got round to installing mine and giving a quick test, for anyone that uses air cooling, what sort of temps are you seeing?

Using a Deepcool AK400 it seems to idle around 40-42c, under load I ran a 30 min cinebench test and it got to 86 at the most, Timespy doesn’t seem to push the temp and in what games I’ve tested it sits at about mid 60s, only thing that concerned me was loading up Stalker 2 and during the shader compilation it was hitting 94c

Should I be concerned or is it a one off with a seemingly not very well optimised game?

Shader comp is the type of load that can 100% a CPU but 94C seems a bit toasty. Seeing 150W+ power draw during Stalker 2 shader comp and 78C using arctic freezer ii 420 here

So probs fine if its just that smaller air tower cooler tbf.

Not bad, you must have a decent chip. I don't have the full screenshot to hand atm, but the best I've achieved so far is...

That was running a 5.575Ghz at 1.21v. CB23 is really hard on these CPUs, so I don't plan to go any higher on voltages on this bench.
Yeah I think mine was running the around the same voltage. Was that score from a clean/minimal install?

It doesn’t really bother me because the performance is perfectly good with PBO, 10x and +200 but is there any reason why I can’t manually overclock this at all?

I’ve tried 5.55 and 5.5ghz at 1.35v but both crash as soon as they’re stressed in Cinebench etc.

I’m aware that overclocking is harder without eclk, but it seems strange that I can’t overclock at all.

I’ve got tight ram and a seemingly strong IMC, so don’t think the chip is bad.

I'd be careful with using 1.35v on a manual OC as not only is that quite high but protections will be disabled.

Hmmm Black Friday maybe a good time to invest in an AIO

I’ll keep and eye on it see if temps start creeping or any crashes, maybe also try an undervolt. Tbf I bought the HSF and the 7600 in June and no intention of upgrading anytime soon, damn you pc gaming and the constant itch to upgrade :D

CB23 is tough to run for the 9800X3D, which is an odd thing to say but for some reason its true.

So set a max of 1.2v - 1.225v in BIOS, and set a multiplier of 5300 and see if you pass a run of CB23. If you do rinse and repeat moving up in steps of 5.300Ghz/5.325Ghz etc until you run it and it freezes.

It seems that silicon lottery gods can put you anywhere between 5.3Ghz and 5.6hz at 1.2 - 1.225v.

In my testing, eclk is good, but for maximum ultimate performance, fixed voltage and all core overclocking nets the highest overall performance.

However, it is the hardest method of achieving your score as you have to balance voltage, temperature and clock speed carefully.
