AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Thanks, would probably be a Noctua I'd use if I went air. (Though they have gotten pretty expensive these days)
I'm planning out a new build, and I had already decided I wasn't going with another Corsair all singing all dancing iCue required rgb disco setup, so was looking something more simple like the Phanteks AIO or EK, but then thought, do I even need an AIO for a 9800X3D...
I haven't changed my CPU cooler or PSU since 2009; my Noctua U12P still cools my 5800X3D well and IIIRC the latest X3D CPUs are actually a bit cooler?

I always found that the X3D cpus at least the last two gens run generally cooler than the intel equivalents. I.e 7800x3d runs cooler than the 13900k and the 9800x3D runs cooler than the 14900k.

so I never really understood why long term AMD users say it a hot running cpu. Maybe if you compare it to non X3D maybe sure.

Of course you can bring the temps down in bios use particular settings but in my somewhat limited experience of X3D whether it is gaming and using it for productivity although that is not really the X3D forte outright the temps are more consistent.

So let’s take a particular game which runs the cpu hot like cyberpunk just for arguments sake my 7800x3d or 9800x3d more or less will run it consistently at a certain temp where as the equivalent intel will run it all over the shop. One minute I will think wow that’s pretty good temps then next moment it will be running at highish temps. While this is perfectly well within temps limits it always made me feel uneasy.

I also feel you can get away with running more modest cooling setups. Sure you can run an air cooler on the 13900k or 14900k that I am not disputing but you got to understand that the cpu can and will draw over 250w over a sustained long period of time using certain applications. That means it going to run hot and any air cooler or AIO is going to run loud.

Now is easy enough to say I am hating on the intel as it is now the trend or I am just saying that because I have the latest and shiniest AMD greatest. But it already left a bad taste regardless of the 7800x3d or the 9800x3D when I changed from the 13900k to the 14900k. I still have my 12900k setup as I love it as it still in my opinion the best incarnation of the LGA1700 series. Although I am giving it away to a friend as I have too many PC’s now.

Anyone running a 9800X3D just with an air cooler? How are the temps?

Temps are around 40 idle, 60 for games 80 for benchmarks.

The chip doesn't produce much heat, but it is not the best at dissipating the heat it does produce. A good way to picture it is as if the CPU is made of plastic rather than metal - don't matter what cooler you put on it, the limitation is not the cooler, it's the chip itself.

Do you think my Peerless Assassin 120 that I currently have on my 5800x3d will be fine on the 9800x3d I bought last week? I'm buying the motherboard at the end of month, hopefully; probably n X670e board. Would appreciate peoples recommendations.

Yes it would be fine for the most part. It not a super duper hot chip and less so if you are not much into overclocking. But I would recommend dropping the temps with PBO negative just to bring temps down none the less.

You're really after the other thread, but guestimates have all placed them as arriving in January now after the initial rush hubub (and that xmas no one is working so things aren't moving). So your best bet is to set up stock alerts for it, and keep an extra eye for them in the week after xmas and after New Year to try and see if any batch of it arrived early.

I want to upgrade my 3600 to a 9800x3d - does anyone have an idea as to how long I would realistically be waiting before we can get the chip
I think realistically with the post about shutdown over the Xmas period and all of the allocation that OCUK had and other retailers it could be mid Jan onwards. The CPU is highly sought after. Given that a fair amount of scalpers have also gotten their hands on them as well means there is even less to go around.

But there will be a point where supply will outstrip the demand and who knows more used will turn up and at more reasonable prices.

I am going to guess the demand will drop a bit for when the 9950x3d drops and people will start chasing after that. Granted that is in a different price bracket and it target audience is not the hardcore gamer which the 9800x3d is clearly aimed at. And again once the 5090/5080 drops as people will budget for it.

Either way I think you are really going to enjoy it coming from a 3600.

Looking around, no one really wants to say, but we seem to be talking about Feb.

And the worse it gets the more the scalpers will be out and the less likely it is you will get one.

I want one, but I won't pre-order, so I will probably be waiting a good few months.

What is the most cost effective cooling for 9800X3D? Do they run much hotter than 7800X3D?

I went for a ThermalRight PhantomSpirit for my 7800X3D, at the time it was the best option as the Noctua needed an extra offset bracket to barely beat it (I have an old D15, but it's the classic design, which looked out of place in the newer build). Now, one can get a smidge more performance with the LBC version of the updated D15, but it costs twice what I paid for the original D15 a decade ago. Not worth the cost, especially when the 7800X3D runs cool and quiet.

The 9800X3D run several degrees cooler still, making liquid cooling and pricey options like the D15 even more unnecessary. I'd go for the best of the ThermalRight coolers, top tier performance for decent price and without the terrible aesthetics, since there's no black version of the updated G15. Checkout HardwareCanucks air cooler videos, they have some good thermal benchmarks and charts that can help one find an ideal cooler.

Long story short, don't bother with expensive coolers with these CPUs, they don't need it. Now Intel CPUs on the other hand...

On the OCUK website it states the following

Stock Update: We cannot guarantee orders placed after 12:00 28th November before Christmas. Orders placed now are expected mid-late January 2025.

My 5800X3D was hitting max temps under stress testing without curve optimiser. 7 of the 8 cores can hit -30 (max reduction), the other only -22 but it helps temps a lot.

I have a 5800x currently, do you think its worth it to upgrade to a 9800X3D or a 9900X3D (when it releases) if im mainly going to be playing 1440p and sometimes 4k?
I hear some people say it wont make any difference at higher resolutions, but then others say it makes a big difference for the 1% lows and its just a bit more stable
