AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Also I don't think it's accurate to look at CPU usage and say if it's at 100% it's bottlenecking the GPU. CPU bottle necks don't necessarily need to be at 100% as some games will not use all the cores or will cause spikes in CPU usage which a slower end CPU can't keep up.

For me the more accurate thing is to look at GPU usage. That should in an ideal world be pegged at 99%.

So these was my CPU temps before and after.
So I managed to get my CPU temps down from doing a -20 curve opt, limiting the throtting and changing the PPT, these temps are from running Cinebench, by at least 20deg, left picture is what it was, right is latest
PC hasnt crashed yet, not sure if I should still mess about with the curve opt or not.
This is one a Noctua NH-D15
the prior seems high for an NH-D15 depedning on what you were doing(for gaming), i have a u12A and even at stock i/e no curve i never saw temps like that under full load etc unless running something like linpack extreme and only then from memory did i see like 88c.

Next thing to check is mounting and probably a repaste just incase then.

Do Overclockers sell this?
I take it is the NM-AMB12 chromax.black mounting bar
there's 2 separate ones, 1 for vertical mounting and 1 horizontal. looks like they both have the same product id, but this is the one you want https://noctua.at/en/nm-amb15-chromax-black for traditional horizontal mounting. looks like ocuk doesnt sell it, i brought it elsewhere.

This chart shows it AMB-12

I definitely seem to be CPU limited in some games like Space Marine 2 (spec in sig), very comfortable FPS of course but often GPU utilisation gets pretty low.

Arctic MX-6, Not had long with the chip but it seems to be doing a good job.
I hear good things regarding the MX-4, even after years of use, so hopefully the MX-6 is just as good.

That and Thermal Grizzly keeps coming up, but there are a few of those I’m unsure which. Only the “extreme” shows in the reviews I’m seeing up to now and it’s out of stock where I am buying.

Thanks :)

MX-6 is just a little bit easier to apply than MX-4, Other than that no real meaningful difference.

SM2 was the game I was playing that prompted me to make the switch last week.
For me it was Darktide. There was a spot in the Mourning Star lobby area which typified what I was seeing in matches, where the FPS would drop to around 85 from 140+ when looking in a specific direction. This tallied with the drops I was seeing in mission.

It's now smooth as anything, and that same view in the lobby is 140+ as it is most of the time.

Helldivers 2 was also brutal on the 5800X3D, still perfectly playable, but it was limited to around 90fps with 70% CPU usage, where now it's 120+. That upgrade has actually been more impressive than I expected, especially as the resolution (1440p Ultrawide) is getting towards mostly GPU bound scenarios.

Most pastes are much the same'ness, link.

I was an avid Arctic Silver 5 user. Always spread by strip of plastic card. Did try others that came with blocks, etc. Some harder to spread then AS5.

When tried MX-4 I found it easy to apply, reasonable temps, and most of easy to clean off.

Used to use TIM cleaner with other pastes, but MX-4 just wipes off, with very little to no residue.

So that's been by go to for 4 years now. Usually buy a larger tube as can at times be swapping a few CPUs and lasts well in storage.

The main difference with MX-6 is on CPUs like the 14900K where it can bring the load temp down by something like 3C compared to MX-4 - I've not tried the 9800X3D to compare but the 7800X3D there is basically no difference to MX-4 aside from one being easier to apply than the other.
