AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D

Hey, Troops. Forgive my laziness and give me the scoop - 7800x3d to 9800x3d; yay or nay?
Looking at small to moderate % gains even at 1080p on 4090. So if you game at higher res or on a weaker graphics card, not worth the outlay IMO. Better to put the money towards more powerful GPU or future cpu, or at least wait until the price drops.

Depends how much you are adamant about staying up with the top line lol. People in here will probably say it’s a no no unless you’re also doing productivity.

I personally only game and am still going from 7800X3D to 9800X3D. Won’t be a big upgrade at all, but still an upgrade, and every extra frame I can pull when I’m using high refresh is worth it.

Helps that I am selling my 7800X3D and getting most of the outlay back though.

Has anyone reviewed this with settings that people actually use? 1440p, 4k ultra settings etc? The 1080p score is impressive but largely meaningless.
Guru3D has, but their game selection is getting quite old now.

I couldn't post anymore yesterday as I reached my daily allowed limit of posts.........but I managed to secure one from...elsewhere. Was due today but lo and behold there's been a delay at DPD's sorting centre.....

I also completed the order of the rest of my build on OCUK after confirming my 9800.....and they didn't dispatch it.....so I'm now hoping that both will arrive tomorrow. Fingers crossed.

May not arrive unless you paid for Saturday delivery.

Most places deliver Monday to Friday as its cheaper than the weekend

I see OCUK also have stopped the pre order sales on the 9800X3D now and it says "notify me" to let you know when its back in stock.

These must have still been selling like mad for them to stop the pre orders on them now

I contacted OCUK CS and they made sure the rest of my build got sent out Saturday delivery, but yeah the 9800 might not, I have received a fair number of parcels from DPD on a Saturday that I haven't paid for Saturday delivery on though, so still hopeful I'll get it all tomorrow.

Assuming DPD haven't just straight up nicked it that is.

Some Cyberpunk 2077 results, first run on a 9800X3D. Turbo mode disabled.

9800X3D SMT On Partially Tuned: 379.31 FPS

9950X SMT Off Fully Tuned: 315.13 FPS

Note: SMT Off for the 9950X is beneficial to performance in Cyberpunk 2077.

Can you please test with PT on (all other settings maxed out), 1080p w/ DLSS Ultra Performance in this scene?

Maybe a stupid question, but from the screenshots it looks like they're all testing different areas of the game ? So why would the frame-rates be consistent ?

Different zones could definitely change the outcome.

Nevertheless what we can see is a trend over 4 unique samples from reviewers where the average framerate drops as quality goes up but the minimums increase significantly.

A deliberate test would be needed to confirm the observation.

I think you mean HuB and Techspot are identical
and there is a simple explanation. Steve from HuB provides written CPU/GPU reviews on Techspot, so it is the same data

Yep, looking at one screenshot and reading the name off the other :p

Well that answers why they're the same numbers.

I watched a YT video on those realistic settings. Average FPS was very close, it was the 1% and 0.1% lows that was slightly higher with the 9800X3D.

So if you want a smoother gaming experience and have money to burn, go for it. Otherwise wait for the 7800X3D to drop in price or search the used market.

Okay did a quick run for you. Note, I could definitely improve on this score if I run it more. :p

This is not a great CPU test as it's GPU limited for large parts of the run.

I had a search but couldn't see this posted, I play a lot of strategy sim games and saw this site had dome some benchmarks on games I play. It's German btw

Unfortunately in that review they are testing Cities Skylines 2 frame rates rather than simulation rates which is a shame.

My X870 ProArt mobo came today, just have to wait for the 2nd wave of deliveries now for the CPU.

Did not realise the CPU would be this popular, otherwise I would have been a bit more decisive and ordered 10 mins earlier.
