AMD SAM / Rocket Lake?

Hi

Managed to get my grubby hands on a 6700 XT and looking at a fresh build over my ancient sandy bridge system. Part of me wants to hold on until DDR5 although I feel it may be another 18-24+ months before prices become reasonable and tech matures (anyone think otherwise?.. SPEAK NOW! :D)

Wasn't sure if this would be better in CPU, GPU or memory, so I'll stick it here: I've had a look and I'm still unsure if rocket lake CPUs will be compatible with SAM. Out the 11th gen lineup I'd probably go for a 11400f since 11600kf doesn't look too flash overclocking and won't likely result in a bottleneck. I would however like to squeeze as much juice out of my 6700 as possible, so SAM is what I'm after. On the red team I'd go for a 3600 CPU which I see is confirmed compatible. Anyone got any news on intel with amd gpu?

For context I'll mostly be playing WOW, Warzone and Valheim.

SAM is hit and miss, wouldn't worry about it. DDR5 will be super expensive and completely pants for ages. 5600X is more appropriate, Newegg have them often at £258 which includes VAT and free shipping.

idk, on the games that support it you're getting a 10%+ framerate boost... is there a reason to choose intel?

I don't have a massive budget which is why I was looking at the 11400 and 3600, although it's more a case of bang for buck rather than a finance issue. If I'm going to be upgrading in a couple years I don't want to be futureproofing unnecessarily, however do want to make best use of the 6700xt @ £600~.

I'm gaming at 1440p with two other 1080p monitors for desktop use. Yesterday I picked up my first "gaming display" @ 144hz and messed around a bit on CSGO.. can definitely see the difference so do want to be somewhere north of 100fps, ideally 120fps...

Dilemma.

hmmm... and 5600x seems to have an edge on 11600k :confused: damn, wouldn't mind a 5600x now

x570 tomahawk 213
5600x 310
32gb 3600mhz cl16 170
noctua d15 80
psu 80~
pcie4 nvme ~170
case 100~
6700 xt 600~

£1700~ (£1100 w/o card) :(

or

3600 165
b450 tomahawk 80
16gb 3600mhz cl16 85
cooler master 212 33
psu 80
pice3 nvme 110

£1200 (£600 w/o card)

dinnah, think it's either go budget 3600 or wait until ddr5 and next lot of gpus....

Just over £1700 :( might wait until ddr5 and next lot of gpus like....

  • Why do you need 32GB of RAM?
  • Why do you need an expensive X570 board?
  • The Noctua D15 is massive overkill for something like a 5600X, you could spend half that much and have more than adequate cooling.
  • Why do you need a gen 4 NvME? You're unlikely to ever notice the difference between a Gen 3, in most cases you wont notice the difference between SATA 3 SSDs and Gen 3.
  • Reuse your old or look at different cases? There's plenty of decent options for around £50-60.
This would be more than ample for gaming, is less than you were considering, and has a 5800X instead of the 5600X:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £919.93 (includes shipping: £0.00)

More budget friendly version with 16GB of RAM and a 5600X:

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £774.93 (includes shipping: £0.00)

You could save more again by dropping down to a 3600.

The 2 system specs are total crap... you can have the same parts for both with ever cpu no reason why the 5600 as to be £500 more.

what would you spec then?

What I'm saying is both will work with the cheaper spec.

ANY CPU...
b450 tomahawk 80
16gb 3600mhz cl16 85
cooler master 212 33
psu 80
pice3 nvme 110
case 50

The 5600 spec cost more because you added crap you don't need.

You said the 5600 cost more but the cooler was 3x the cost case was 2x the cost why did you suddenly need 32gb of ram over the 16gb on other spec

idk things just fell into my basket :D think it was a go hard or go home moment

After scam changed their "today only" price on the 5600x from £309+freedel to £329+post, I rechecked a website mentioned earlier and snaffled one for £270 all in
Ballistix rgb 3600mhz cl16 (e-die) 32gb on order 170

Now to decide which mobo, psu, cooler, case and nvme

Congrats, I see there are some cases suggested above, it depends on the size (form factor) of the build you want ie itx, matx, atx

cheers
yes wouldn't mind a matx though my 6700 is triple slot so maybe a bit cramped, 7 day lead time on ram and cpu so plenty time to research
