Chip maker AMD has hinted that the Xbox 360's successor will be able to deliver computer graphics to match those in James Cameron's movie Avatar.

In an interview with the US incarnation of the Official Xbox Magazine, AMD exec Neal Robison claimed that gamers have "a lot to be excited about", the Examiner reports

Robison claims the AI and physics capabilities of the net-gen console would pave the way for every pedestrian in games such as Grand Theft Auto to have an individual mentality.

AMD hasn't confirm it is actually working on Microsoft's eagerly anticipated follow-up, but as Robison is director of independent software vendor relationships at AMD, it's probable that has been extensively speaking with games developers.

And AMD did provide the graphics chippery for the Xbox 360.

Not sure I believe it myself, but would be good to see it happen.

Even if the hardware is capable of such beauty, I doubt the devs are going to spend the same time and money to recreate Avatar-esque worlds. :D

Don't see that being possible either.

Besides, am not fussed with games looking that good yet. Todays games already look mostly good enough, but just need to be running 1080p with AA, improved textures and better draw distances.

The current Xbox could probably render something close to that if it pre-rendered the frames like they do on films. Spend an hour rendering each frame then save it as a picture to form part of a video. It's a big vague really.

ROFL.. avatar the DVD version perhaps?

I think that getting graphics to look that good is almost impossible at this stage. These things are rendered by server fans for goodness sake, you just CANNOT do it that well on the fly with our currently technology.

Even taking a much older CGI title such as Final Fantasy... we still cannot do as good as that on the fly. Where do companies come up with this crap?

This may be the most retarded comment I have ever read.

Sounds like utter bs to be honest. Maybe if they ditch the graphics engine, audio engine and everything else, they could model a few hundred AIs.

The only way they could reasonably do something like Avatar would be with masses of clever procedural generation. The artwork would just be too time consuming to generate in advance, so you'd have to have a way to do it procedurally.

Server fans rendered avatar? I can't wait to see what the CPU's are capable of.

Lol... Toy Story graphics in real time with the PS2...

Why do people make these lies and why do other people believe them?

Avatar doesn't even look that good anyway, a lot of the CG is quite poor by today's standards.

People had the same reaction when sony claimed the NGP would be capable of PS3 quality visuals, and that ended up being true. Something a lot of people forget is that with a console and its strict fixed hardware, a lot of performance can be had out of it, that's generally one of the biggest problems with graphics performance, the massive variation of hardware available for PCs often means games aren't anywhere near as optimised as first party console games. Look at some first party PS3 release games like Heavenly sword, I still think that is quite an impressive looking game in some parts.

Considering how much graphics hardware has moved on since the PS3 and 360 development days, I think a lot of people will find themselves surprised at just how good first party next gen playstation and xbox games will end up looking.

It seems people have an absolutely awful memeory when it comes to graphics hardware, look at how many people suddenly believe a graphics card is uncapable the day a new generation is out, for some reason all the games out suddenly need a higher spec to play than they did the day before. The AMD 5000 series springs to mind, where a load of people suddenly thought that 4850s and 4870s couldn't play the recent games at the time at 1920x1200 with max settings, when the day before they were "great for 1920x1200 maxed with the latest games". A 4850 is still quite a capable card for a lot of modern games yet people forget it.
