Im building a cheap SFF for my brother and he has just purchased...

AMD 2800 Sempron (Socket 754)
Clock speed 1.6Ghz
Level 1 cache (kb) 128 KB
Level 2 cache (kb) 256 KB

Do these chips overclock ok?

Could i reach 2ghz with this? As i have had no experience with Semprons.

Thanks

Well just looked on some other forums and it seems these clock pretty well. Most seem to be reaching 2.2ghz. Not bad for such a cheap chip.

Will have a play this afternoon

I've read that the socket 754 Semprons are usually fantastic overclockers. They are based on the AMD64 'Venice' core but with a smaller L2 cache (128k or 256k as opposed to 512k).

Apparently its not unusual for people to manage 2.6Ghz out of them.

Good luck with your overclocking :)

before i write this i just want to say in no way am i against overclocking, i love it :D now that said;

can i ask why are you overclocking it really?

please correct me if im wrong, if its a cheap SFF im guessing its either going to be a media centre, or a download box or maybe just an occasional office use type pc, in none of these cases do you really need to OC the CPU, all your honestly going to do is increase his electricity usage and give him a bigger bill

Yeah, Semprons do clock

They need to, they are such bloody awful CPUs as normal.

You will need to make sure the Mobo is a good clocker though... Stock Mobo and forget it.

I had a 2800 for a few days a while back... I am sure it went to as much as 2.4 Actually, but I might be confusing it with another CPU, cos I also had a 3300 ( Utter waste of money ) and I still got a 3100 ( Actually not a bad CPU ) thats running stock.

To be honest though... I would throw the Sempron away if you plan on doing anything more than EMails and get at least a 512K CPU... Newcastle 3000 for example - I got one of those too, and its running 2.5 and it a serious CPU for the price.

Well i have reached 2.4ghz with ease. System runs like a dream. Prime stable.

all your honestly going to do is increase his electricity usage and give him a bigger bill

You are a funny man.

mikeymike has a point, unless i'm wrong about the nature of the computer (fair enough if i am) over-clocking will see no benefit to downloading/emails/music etc and will just increase the bill

Yes ok... If you are doing basic computing, then sure, keep it stock.

However, once you realise just how poor it runs, you might just want that extra bit out of it... Sometimes its worth the effort in squeezing that bit out just so you can actually play something a bit more CPU intensive that Solitaire.
