I have a Sapphire 7800XT Nitro+ and for some reason I can't get the custom fan curve in the Adrenalin software to actually do what it's told.

In the screenshot bellow with the custom curve turned off the fans are at 1300rpm at 58c.

In the screenshot below with the fan curve turned on the fans at 2100pm at 54c even so i've set the curve to keep the fans at 15% until 65c. Please note this isn't actually the type of fan curve I would run with in practice, i've just set it up like this for testing purposes and to illustrate the problem i'm having.

Am i doing something wrong or do custom curves simply not work?

Thanks

Check it against the GPU Hotspot temp, not the GPU temp.
The hotspot tends to jump to somewhere in the 80s no matter what as far as I can tell and with the fan curve turned off the fans are 15% or so despite the hotspot temp.

As far as i'm aware the fans respond to the GPU temp only (I might be wrong?).

Does your card have a bios switch. It might be on quiet bios which is interfering with settings. It could also be msi afterburner if you have that installed.

I think it is the hotspot temp controlling the fan curve. You're over 80 degrees so it is nearly at 100% rpm.

How come there is a nearly a 30 degree difference. Is that normal for the 7800 card? I'm sat here idle 31, hotspot 35.

If your hotspot jumps to the 80 degree range regardless of fan speed that sounds like a paste issue to me.

It does but i have it set to quiet mode and Afterburner is not loaded.

I’ve never known if its normal or not as user reports on reddit are very conflicting.

Yeah no worries, understandable. I've only got experience doing paste on 6000 series. To me though it does seem high. How long have you had the card? My 6900 had to be done after 2 years.

Had it a couple of years now, I don’t think the temps are any higher now than they were when new.

Looks like it could do with a repaste. The hotspot and GPU temperature seem a long way apart to me. Some cards are worse than other from the factory, but 26c delta is pretty high. Id expect under 20c.
