building a new pc for my friend he insists on Amd so i will be using AMD Phenom II X3 Tri Core 720 Black Edition will be overclocking to 3.4 ghz so was wondering is the stock cooler efficient or will i require a new one to achieve the overclock.
AMD stock coolers are pretty basic (but I've not used one for 3 years, I dont know if they improved since then) designed to to the job at stock speeds or low overclocking, So I would say yes. But see how far you can get using the stock cooler, you may be pleasantly surprised.
From memory using the stock cooler for a month when I originally installed my old am2 cpu was quite noisy especially when spinning at 6000 rpm lol wasn't too bad at stock. But didn't seem to like a huge amount of overclocking.
Assume the design's changed a bit since those days tho
think i have decided to use the Arctic Cooling Freezer 64 Pro PWM CPU Cooler (Socket 754/939/940/AM2) its gets got reviews and ratings by other customs does anyone no if this will work tho on a AM3 mb.
Id of thought so as most other coolers that are AM2 are also AM3 compatible, I presume they just havent updated the info, however for a little bit more you can get the sunbeam which is a cracking cooler
