Just completed a new system build for a friend and was getting rather silly temps at idle.
CPU was only an AMD dual core.
Took the stock heatsink off, cleaned the paste away and applied some Prolimatech thermal compound and the temps dropped by 11C.

I would credit a lot of that temp drop to the decrease in thermal material, why do AMD bother putting so much on in the first place ?

Beats having too little I suppose.

Must do the same tonight with my wee AMD box - can't actually monitor the temps other than in the BIOS [running XenServer] but I dare say AS5 > OEM Gunk.

Which AMD Dual Core? Some of the modern one's are just quad cores with two cores disabled, but they still have to be there so you can access the memory controller. This means that they give off more heat than if they were true dual cores.
