AMD Surpasses NVIDIA in Discrete Graphics Shipments

Advanced Micro Devices passed Nvidia in graphics chip shipments in the second quarter, according to a report from a marketing research firm Mercury Research, on Wednesday, adding to Nvidia's woes.

AMD's ATI graphics unit took 51 percent of the standalone, or "discrete," graphics chip market compared to Nvidia's share that was just shy of 49 percent, according to Mercury Research, a Cave Creek, Arizona firm that tracks graphics chip shipments. This is a sharp reversal from the same period a year ago when Nvidia had about 59 percent of the market and AMD had just under 41 percent.

Total market figures for the second quarter of 2010 had Intel with a 54.3 percent share, AMD with 24.5 percent, and Nvidia with 19.8 percent. This, also, is a setback for Nvidia: in the second quarter of last year, Nvidia had a 29.6 percent share compared to AMD's 18.2 percent.

Nvidia warned Wednesday that revenue would fall short of earlier projections. The warning came a day after Apple moved its iMac and Mac Pro lines to AMD graphics chips, dropping Nvidia.

I guess it is a good thing, since we already seen Nvidia can't charge premium prices for their cards like they use to, and we now actually seeing some healthy competition on the price level (e.g. GTX460/GTX470). More resonable priced cards from both camps will definitely benefit us the consumers.

But for how long? It's only the desktops that have been refreshed, not the laptops.

When they do get refreshed I would bet that Apple choose ATi over Nvidia.

the only problem there though is how are intel gonna feel about having an ati integrated graphics, it'll have to be a discrete card surely. more likely they'll just use the integrated graphics of the core i3 and i5.

Intel haven't used ATI integrated GPU's since they were bought out by AMD and if I were Intel I would more worried about losing the CPU contract to AMD who would be in a position to supply both the chipset, GPU and CPU in one neat bundle.

This is were AMD has a major advantage over Nvidia and to slightly lesser extent Intel as AMD is in a position to provide all the major components and which is both convenient and cost effective for the customer. Nvidia doesn't do CPU's, Intel can't provide powerful GPU's and AMD so if your the purchasing manager at Apple where do you go?

Problem there with Apple is that it is a premium product (over priced for spec) for students and art'e people.. (shiney shiney) now intel is a huge brand product in them markets with a well known brand image. AMD hasnt got that brand awareness. which would make it a bad move for apple

Aye, especially when they role out fusion. Single chip for all your computing needs. Apple will probably blow their load and go off about how their laptops are thinner, use less power, quieter etc.

I dunno. A fleet of whaaambulances were required when the Intel switch was announced.

Its fairly simple, for laptops at the last refresh they had intended to use Intel intergrated with their new chips, but honestly the intergrated was so crap(for what they wanted) they didn't CHOOSE Nvidia, they decided to go with the designs they basically already had before and relegate the Intel HD to low power usage.

They would also likely have had a huge supply of Nvidia cards to use up. I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if the next proper refresh and redesign includes either AMD discrete with whatever Optimus type stuff AMD introduce next, maybe choose to go with Intel's at some point updated intergrated graphics.

Design cycles completely rule the prebuilt computer/laptop world, Dell couldnt' care less if you release a graphics card 15 times faster in January, it will only make it into mainstream designs at the next introduction of a bunch of new computers, like the back to school timeframe.

THe biggest issue is NOT AMD winning a whole portion of the Apple sales from Nvidia, its yet another thing Nvidia have lost, Apple desktops, Nintendo DS, PS4, chipsets, the low end market will be non existant in a couple years, Dell went from no AMD/ATI Gpu's for years to being widely available in many of their computers and laptops. Nvidia are losing sales and contracts constantly, even in the markets they have either better performance, or undercut AMD in(low end some places, top end). Dell and co prefer to sell a million comps with 5850's in than 50k with 480gtx's in. They are losing huge where they aren't competitive, and they are losing when they have a performance lead aswell. Lots of people just don't want to use Nvidia, Nvidia seem to pee off everyone they get into a business deal with in terms of say with Sony on the PS3, and people they just sell massive numbers of cards too, Apple, Dell, and the list goes on, have all started to move away from Nvidia, largely after all taking huge payoff's for the massive numbers of returns of faulty parts in the past few years.

They seem to have burned all their bridges with none of these companies willing to put up with Nvidia longer than they have to, and thats ignoring how badly Nvidia's partners have suffered with several of them shutting up shop.

Apple buys for most part don't care who makes the parts inside, all they care about is that it says Apple & its white.

Not entirely - they are still trying to make huge single chip cards, as opposed to AMD's cheaper dual-chip design. This is why they're getting such bad yields. They will have to kick their engineers up the backside too.
