The colleagues over at xbitlabs report that upcoming Bulldozer processors have been taped out. AMD hopes to begin sampling of the chips with customers shortly and initiate mass production sometimes in 2011.

The architecture will be used in chips manufactured using the 32-nm process. The company scheduled a 16-core chip code-named Interlagos for release in 2011. Bulldozer is AMD's first properly new processor architecture since the Athlon 64 of 2003. Every AMD chip since then has been a variation on that theme. A tweak here, an added core or floating point unit there, perhaps. But basically the same design.

The "tape out" means that the artwork for the photomask of a circuit is sent to manufacturing.

Based on the information provided by AMD it will feature eight x86 processing engines with multithreading technology, two 128-bit FMAC floating point units, shared L2 cache, shared L3 cache as well as integrated memory controller. AMD also states that the new CPU will feature “extensive new power management innovations”.

Bobcat seems the more interesting product if you ask me, and one where AMD have a real chance in breaking Intel's hold.

Bout time

I hope they beat intel chips.

I fancy a change

+1.
AMD have been fairly compedative towarads Intel, but if they can pile on the heat a little more, it will be great for consumers! Intels chips are AMAZING, but AMDs are solid too; they just need to push a little harder with Bulldozer!

I really hope I get to make an AMD build for my next rig. Ran a S939 Atholn 64 for YEARS and it was a fantastic chip!

i've never used amd. this may be their chance to win me.
they proved they could do it on the gfx side if things, my last nvidia was an 6600GT..

I really hope the 16 cores will run on an 890GX board! Oh please, please allow this.

16 cores, and maybe a higher overclock too because of the 32nm process.... Mmmmmm yes please! :p

Definately going to skip the 6 cores now, and probably the 8 cores. (Unless neither the 12 or 16 cores will run on this board).

I'd imagine the 16 core parts will be the Opteron variants.

Home PC ones will probably be 4-8 cores with AMD's version of Hyper Threading.

Be good to see AMD right back up there and pushing intel, I'm still running my s939 opteron and it would be nice if my next upgrade let me stick with the company who's kit has served me so well!

I've been thinking of replacing the old S939 stuff in our office PC for some Phenom kit as I haven't played with AMD stuff for years. Maybe it's worth waiting a little longer for this though. I suppose if I knew for sure that it would fit in an AM3 board I'd just get it now anyway.

Another one here that would like amd to compete performance wise with intel. I like my q9 but i do hanker for an amd cpu as this is the first intel one since a pentium 2 :).

If its an entirely new architecture wont that need an entirely new socket?

Saw AM3 on a roadmap somewhere. I think it's only for the Bulldozer without the integrated graphics core though.

Not seen anything recent but there is kind of hope for dropping one of these into an AM3 system.

I had a look on wikipedia the other day and it says "AM3r2". Could be like AM2 -> AM2+ -> AM3, so hopefully to continue the trend, these CPUs should work in AM3. On the new socket, quad channel memory maybe? ;)
