AMD Threadripper (Zen 3 59xx Series)

I'm still interested in Threadripper and the new EPYC CPUs. Which one makes the most sense depends on the specifications. I'd be happy to go with Threadripper but EPYC might throw in some important features for really heavy workloads particularly when it comes to IO and networking on the motherboard. If I could have a workstation at home with pretty much the same specs as the server I have in a datacentre then that will make developing web applications much easier as I'd know that benchmarks would be roughly comparable. I'd also be able to simulate VM load and virtual networks on my local machine.

@Cromulent: I am waiting to see what AMD says on Tuesday January 12, at CES 2021... ;)

Perfect - if I was a nine year old looking for somewhere my barbies could practice their dance moves :p

Didn't see any in-use reviews when I searched but that could be because I'm now blind

Incidentally I got this AIO a few weeks back, forgot I had it on order but haven't used it yet as I'm quite happy with my Alphacool Eisbaer 420. Nice that is covers the entire CPU though, and quality looks good too.

I am intrigued to see what they will bring. My guess is that we will have 16, 24, 32 and 64 core CPUs, and yes, we will keep the TRX40 this generation. I think these are good news, I have the 24 core3960X baby threadripper and it packs a decent punch, but it is great to know that there is plenty of room to upgrade :).

Let us know how it performs, if you ever install it and try it out. I'm still waiting on the elusive ProSiphon cooler. Apparently it's stuck in a port, probably keeping some 3080s company somewhere.

Same. I love having 24 cores, but give me 32 cores and some of that Zen 3 single barrel IPC and baby we got a deal. Rumours do suggest a 16 core TR. Clearly there was a demand for them, but this will probably the last gen on TR40X and the MBs are still pricey, will still be an expensive investment.

I don´t plan to upgrade mine soon, since it is powerful enough for what I do (I need to achieve a balance of CPU/GPUs performance, and at the moment the TR is not bottlenecking anything) but definitely, I am much more happy knowing that if I need it I can install a 64 core CPU and jump from 64 to 256Gb of RAM. For me this platform is a bit of long term investment. I think that if I am lucky I will be able to keep this motherboard for around 8-9 years, since the platform has lots of room to upgrade :). I found that the computer is very power hungry, though, I have it paired with a 3090 and a 3070 (plus several hard drives) and when everything is at 80% load the machine happily draws 1000W and can go well beyond that at 100% load . I used to have a Seasonic X-Series 1250W and I had to upgrade to a Corsair AX1600i because my old PSU did not have enough juice (it was also 9 year old...).

Yep it is. I went with a Corsair AX1600i eventually too. I used have two RTX 2080S + a RM1000i and then the PC started shutting down, the power consumption according to the Corsair sensor said 950W, the odd peak at 1050W. I was sailing too close to the wind, and when I inspected the PSU I could see the ATX cable was burnt. Ordered the AX1600i and that worked like a gem with the two 2080S. Now i'll be running a 3080 and a 2080S so should be well in the safe zone and then some.

Almost same story here. I used to have a 2080Ti and a 980Ti, and they were all fine with my previous PSU. Then I installed the 3090 and the 3070 and the first thing I noticed was mobo audio quality degrading when the 3090 was kicking in. Eventually, I started to have black screens and the fans of the card at 100%. I checked with GPU-Z just to find that the PSU was failing to provide enough juice and the card was getting crazy because it was not getting the required amount of power. I re-arranged cables and I started using two PSU outputs for the 3090, this solved the issue, but it was clear that I had to replace it because the unit was too close to the limits. The Corsair works beautifully and all the problems are gone.

Even if it's just a bit of an increase in mhz or higher boost; if it's TRX40 I'll probably swap out my 3970x for its equivalent. This is great for my rendering and multicore applications, but in the single core photoshop grunt work it can get a bit bogged down (frankly this is more on Adobe being utter ****).

Guess we'll find out by the end of the day at CES. Speculations on release date? be nice if it was sometime before 4th quarter 2021 but I'm not holding my breath.

I'm hoping it'll be released at the same time as Zen 3 EPYC. Maybe in the next month or two.

Well they didn't mention Threadripper in the keynote. I am disappoint. It's probably designed but they can't get the yields to supply it.

They describe the cooler as "massive" in the review but it looks a little anemic with those little 120mm fans, be interested in seeing some noise/temp graphs for it.
