AMD to Intel - Advice needed! :)

Hey folks, I've finally decided at long last that I might aswell upgrade my CPU/Mobo to Intel and get the most out of well... everything haha.

Now I'm not on the biggest budget but I'd say from £200 up near the £300 mark. I will mainly be playing games and maybe abit of Photoshop here and there but not much really. With that in mind can someone come up with a upgrade package for me? I've been looking at some on the Overclockers website but I thought I'd ask for some opinions of people who actually know a thing or two ;) before I go ahead and make a balls of it!

My current setup at the moment -

CPU: AMD FX-6200 - Six Core Processor

RAM: 8.00GB Dual-Channel DDR3

Motherboard: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC. SABERTOOTH 990FX

GPU: 4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 (MSI)

Memory: 931GB Seagate ST1000DM003-9YN162 ATA Device (SATA)

You'd be better off getting a 480 (as much I think it's mediocre) and an fx8320

I was looking at the fx8320 but thought it'd be best go ahead to Intel as I've heard a lot better things from people who's made the jump from AMD to Intel. I don't mind spending alittle more for a more future proof cpu/mobo as it'd be worth it in the long run etc.

480? Just to clarify I've already got the GTX 960 GPU etc and everything above in my original post

I don't think you'd see much gain as a 960 is so so.
If you went for an Intel set up. Then changed gpu next year, then fair enough, but then you mays well wait and do it all together.

Though, the fx6200 is pretty crap

I made the jump..best thing i ever did tbh.

Only reason I upgraded my GPU so early on is because my old one died on me and the 960 was on a sale and was rather cheap so I thought what the hell, but with what your saying that was a bad mistake :/

The 960 isn't bad, far from.
But I couldn't justify forking out money on an Intel set up with just a 960.
Then again, because the 6200 is so poor, I couldn't keep going with just a 6200.

I would jump up to a skylake cpu if you can,if you can afford it maybe one of the i5 chips, but, even one of the i3 chips would be ok as in the future you could upgrade it,i too would maybe upgrade the gpu at some point although the 960 isn't a bad card you would be better off with something a little better to get the most out of your upgrade :)

Ahh I understand you guys now about the 960 I have to admit I did rush into buying it and didn't look into any others thats my bad, won't ever do it again!

About the skylake CPU's what kind of mobo would I need? I know I need a certain socket etc but does the mobo effect performance wise? Is there any bundles do you recommend I could get or would it be better getting it all separate?

Pretty much what I'd say as well, it's a catch 22 situation.

It wouldn't be the worst idea in the world to get something like a GTX1060 3GB and a 2nd hand FX8350 for your budget.

Not as good as an Intel setup or even close but it will tick along OK and there's no need to swap out parts or reinstall Windows.

Selling the FX6200 and GTX960 would get you back a decent portion of your spend.

Then think about a total system overhaul at a later date down the road.

Let's say if I wanted an intel build and with a new GPU - What would that be price wise? As I don't really want to be faffing around I'd rather spend the money to get a solid build that'd do me for a good while until I need to upgrade. If you get me

I was checking out the bundles on Overclockers but they don't seem to include a cooler nor ram - So I was thinking would my current RAM be ok? I guess I'd need to get a completely new Cooler as it wouldn't fit an Intel based mobo? Correct me if I'm wrong.

My current ram is - DDR3/8192 MBytes

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £335.48 (includes shipping: £10.50)

If someone could do better and get the whole sha bang for me, I'd be very grateful! Things needed, CPU,Mobo,Cooler, Ram(?) & GPU(?)

If the price could stay around the 500 mark that'd be great ;) But I'm saving up some dosh at the moment for this and selling a few old bits and pieces so my budget may go up.

Sorry if I'm making a right tit of myself, I've got no clue on what's a good deal/what's compatibly with eachother :(

And thanks for all the replies guys and help! Much appreciated!

You would need DDR4 RAM as your moving to Skylake. Will you be doing overclocking as that is important to think about when choosing a CPU Cooler.

Andyy, what games at what screen res?

As others have said, if you keep the 960 chances are it won't need much CPU power, your 6200 with an overclock would be acceptable, or an FX-8 as Martini1991 says. The motherboard is great so should have no trouble. This is what I would do, give it a try, and save up for a complete new system once you've had enough of this one.

Whatever you do, a good SSD would give you a much better experience and would be my priority for an upgrade.

I'd then upgrade the GPU before updating the rest of the platform, OR do it all in one go.

Well at the moment I'm playing games like ArmA 3, Mount & Blade: Warband, League of Legends. @ 1920x1080

I guess it would be best to save up for a whole new system instead of buying bits and pieces. I never even thought about overclocking my current CPU so I think I best do that before anything I guess.. or buy the fx8320 that was mentioned before.

Is it wise to buy a second hand CPU?

No problem buying second hand CPU's. They are pretty much indestructible these days. You'd be pretty unlucky to get a bad one.

Im running with a second hand i7 4770k and have no worries with it.

I had an FX8350 die on me but thankfully got it replaced under warranty. ive also heard of a few 8350's die on other folk but never heard of an intel CPU die

Those games (well Arma and LoL at least, not sure about M&B) will appreciate a bump in CPU speed so that's worth doing.

Especially considering you've got one of the best (or maybe the best) overclocking motherboards on the market. Running it at stock speeds is such a waste  ;)
