AMD to lower R&D spending on computing and graphics products

Advanced Micro Devices said this week that in the light of changing market environment and dropping revenues it will reprioritize its research and development (R&D) investments. The company will lower spending on creation of computing and graphics (CG) products and will boost funding of enterprise, embedded and semi-custom (EESC) projects.

I find this news really sad - ATI were always such a good alternative to NVIDIA, and they pushed NVIDIA to keep releasing new GPU's with healthy performance increases.

Now with the reduced budget, I fear that AMD won't be able to compete with NVIDIA at all in the next few years. Perhaps the 390x family will be the last competitor before AMD are bought out?

Be the optimist and think that they are that much on the ball they can do this and still compete :D. Sadly I'm a realist and it does seem like sad times ahead :(.

AMD.Matt, can you please clarify any of this to put our minds at ease or break our hearts?.

Something had to give but I am surprised they have dropped the one section that seems to do generally well (GPUs). I am sure they know what they are doing and I wouldn't have a clue from a personal POV.

Even if AMD won't push with innovative products anymore, Nvidia will still have to deliver innovation due to requests from OEMs. It's the same with Intel, they are not getting much competition but are releasing new and improved products every year.

Hi J.D,

The article you are referring to represents a pure interpretation of the journalist of what Dr. Su said. On the contrary when it comes to Computing and Graphics our CEO clearly stated that “We plan to introduce a strong 2015 product portfolio, punctuated by the launch of “Carrizo” in the second quarter. Consumer and commercial design win momentum for “Carrizo” continues to gain momentum because it will deliver the largest ever generational leap in performance-per-watt for our mainstream APUs.”

I would encourage you to read instead an article from WCCftech with a totally different perspective on it.

AMD bring out TressFX= Mere
Nvidia bring out Hairwork that basically offer same feature= Awesome

Yep if I was AMD, I wouldn't bother with spend more on innovation but focus on only the essential as well...it's investment with no reward

Yes, even in areas of low competition manufacturers cannot stand still, because if they do someone will come along and kick them up the arse completely out of the blue, then the market leader is suddenly playing catch up.

Phew *deep breath.

Hi AMDMatt and thank you for the reply.

Interesting read and has me yearning to see another P4 like thrashing. I hope you guys can pull it off. Erm, Matron?. Sorry I can't help myself. Seriously though, it sounds promising.

It did seem a bit strange as we await the new cards to arrive to hear this but I'm glad it's all gravy on your end ;). I hope AMD deliver something revolutionary in terms of performance with the new R9 3 series and following family of GPUs along with the Carrizo family in early Q2. I'm really interested in seeing AMDs new card.

Have you witnessed the performance of any of the new 3 series cards yet Matt?. Not asking what you think, just if you've had some numbers thrown your way. You know what it's like sitting on this side of the fence :(.

:D

That picture is surprisingly accurate.

Why would you have to bring those other pictures up when it's likely that some of my work colleagues will see these pictures for the first time? I'll have some explaining to do come Monday morning. :D :o :(

To show I'm a good sport though and before someone else here posts them, I'll re-post them just for you JD. ;)

In my defence this was for a competition to win a 290X graphics card from Overclockers back in June.

What can i say? I wanted that card and i was prepared to go the extra mile to get it... Sadly i didn't win though. :o :p
