I was wondering as to what Intel processor would give similar performance to an AMD 5600+. They would be for servers so I wouldn't be overclocking them at all. I know things are very different between the two, just wondering what people thought would be similar performance wise.

I would agree with above the c2d seems to have a good 400mhz on a am2, so i would deffo say between 6400/6600 at stock.

But you could get a Athlon 6000+ for similar price to a E6600 ;)

The 6k + wont overclock more as 300 mhz though, tops, all sites but 2 seem to be unable to clock the chip more as 250 ish mhz..., while the c2d 6600 should do 3.4 ghz at least, wich would make it as fast as a amd x2 @ 4 ghz approximatly, if not more

In OP's case both will do just fine since he is not overclocking, however the X2 6000+ will consume considerably more power (125W TDP) whereas the C2Ds have half the TDP - might worth considering when building a server.

The TDPs are measured differently by the two companies though.
AMD give the absolute theoretical maximum, while Intel give a typical real world value.
So the two processors are closer then the figures suggest.

Depends on the environment, if the system is running a 64 bit OS and is running memory/cache intensive stuff with a large amount of ram, the X2 will pull slightly ahead as it has a better 64 bit design and independent cache.
However the c2d has a lower thermal output and will be slightly better in a 32 bit environment.
Personally i would go for the c2d due to thermals and the difference between the two being near to nothing.

Taking into account the price of other compatible hardware (motherboard mostly, as well as compatible 1U HSFs) that we're happy with, we've decided to go with the AMD.

The server will be running a 64Bit OS with a minimum of 2GB RAM for those wondering.

Thanks for all of your helpful input :)
