AMD FM1 631 vs Intel Pentium G840, similair price, but which one is better??

AMD is Quad-Core while Intel is dual.

The Pentium G840 will perform better per clock. It also has an onboard GPU unlike the Athlon II X4 631. However the Athlon can be overclocked.

Depends on the use really, what is the system for?

Low budget system for a friend, going to pair it up with 6850, He`s going to use it for everything... Just cant decide what CPU would be better in general.

Yeah, got around 300 max to spend, no OS, GPU, Monitor, keyboards, mouses ect needed.

However doesnt 6850 need 500W power supply? Also the 2100 is non-OC? So 631 overckocled to around 3.5ghz pull up a good fight? Since I heard they OC like hell...

The 6850 doesn't need that much power and the CX 430 V2 is a very good PSU and is more than capable to power the system.

The i3 can't be overclocked but on it's default 3.1ghz speed combined with the Sandy Bridge architecture it should easily beat the Athlon even when overclocked.
