AMD Vs Nvidia for vr

In currently using a quest 3 and and a AMD 6700xt which I've not had any issues with and the card has been fine for the last few headsets I've paired it with but it's getting on a bit and the next gen GPUs are just around the corner so starting to think about upgrading it and if anyone has actually noticed much difference between the 2 brands when it comes to using it in vr? I don't really do much gaming other than vr so will be purchasing for vr mainly.
 
In general Nvidia cards have been preferred as the video encoders used for VR video encoding on Quest headsets tend to be better on Nvidia.

That’s my understanding to, though I’ve no idea why.

Do AMD GPUs have dedicated encoders embedded? I know that my 3080ti does, meaning that there’s no overhead for encoding the video for transfer to my Quest Pro via USB cable.

It doesn't really matter any more, Nvidia might still be a little better than AMD in VR but the difference is so slight, I don't think it should factor into any purchase decision. At the time you go to purchase, get the best card you can for your budget.

Like melmac says, get the best card you can afford.

I have found with VR it needs raw power more than anything and I have used both Nvidia and AMD for VR.

It's sort of a carry over from the early days of VR with the Rift Civ1 and the Vive. Nvidia were much more proactive in the VR space. Their drivers contained improvements specific to VR. They had technologies like VRSS to help with frame rate. And in general their cards just worked better in VR games.

When the Quest line of headsets released. Again Nvidia had the advantage. They had much better H.264 encoders. Before the release of their RDNA 2 cards, AMD's H.264 encoders were terrible, slow and got slower with any increase in Bitrate. AMD's H.265 encoders were better, still not as good as Nvidia, but it was the only way you could get reasonable performance in VR from an AMD card. It wasn't helped by their driver team either. It was a long time, even with the RDNA 2 cards, before AMD would work with anything over 100Mbps bitrate. And even then it would work in one driver and then not work in any other driver for a year. So VR users were forced to continue to use older drivers for VR.

Then RDNA 3 arrive. These have almost completely closed the gap with Nvidia as far as encoders are concerned. The only problem was the drivers. It took them 6 months or more before they had drivers out that got full performance in VR. But that's all sorted now and Nvidia and AMD are now basically a wash when it comes to VR.
