AMD: We have surpassed Nvidia in mobile GPU sales

good on ati.

the excelent thing with the ati mobility cards is that they are very close comparisons to their desktop companions. Where as nvidia think its right to call a card that runs about the same as the 9800GTS a GTX 280m

Doesn't surprise me AMD+ATI laptops are miles cheaper than Intel+NVidia ones, you tend to pay a massive premium just for the Centrino label.

Thats not entirely true (tho I'm not a fan of nVidias scamming with the naming schemes) but while the mobile 4850 is close to the desktop 4850, due to problems with heat and power use the mobile 4870 has to be downclocked and so is barely faster than the 4850... which is roughly the same speed as the "260"m and slower than the "280"m... the 46xx and similiar ATI series are roughly the same as their desktop parts - but so are most of the G92b based nvidia laptop parts.

My girlfriend has a 280m (i know its not the same as the desktop 280) coming in her new kobalt laptop, no ati option with them unfortunately.

Got a 260m in my laptop, clocked up slightly so it runs same speed as 250 desktop part... its not too bad for gaming and runs really cool in the clevo chassis.

I like it - a bit heavier than other standard laptops (partly due to the massive chunk of copper for the heatsink) - but the cooling is really good and quiet and performance is great.

With normal use/medium settings I get around 2.5 hours battery life and even with gaming I generally manage atleast an hour.

This is no wonder after the fiasco of laptops dying due to Nvidia GPU failures. The 8600mGT was a particular model with 'issues'. I remember looking at buying dell xps 15 but being put off by the sheer number of people on forums saying 'my screens gone funny' or 'laptop black screen' etc. I guess manufactures have got bored of it too and switched sides...

(still ended up with a nvidia mobile gpu though!)
