I'm aware there's a "halfway" mobo for Intel in respects for using DDR before DDR2 but still going dual, but is there one for AMD?

I can't really afford to go mobo, cpu, memory all at once at the moment. I can manage a mobo and cpu.

I've had a poke around, but I've not seen anything.

No.

For Intel CPUs the memory controller is part of the north bridge, you chose the NB type depending on the ram you want to use. With AMD the memory controller is on the CPU so there is no option 939=DDR1; AM2=DDR2.

Yup you won't get one for AMD CPUs.

There are plenty of low-cost options for Core 2 Duo, just how "budget" are you talking?

E4300/E6300 is about £100, and you could get a DDR & DDR2 supporting board for £40 or so, it is doable :) There is a list of DDR C2D boards somewhere around here.
