AMD X2 driver and hotfix correct installation

If you're moving from a single-core to a dual-core is it necessary to reinstall the OS?

Well... Ive moved from single-core to dual-core and rebooted. PC started up and installed itself what I presumed was the processor driver, restarted again, and that was it. Started getting some problems (stuttering sound) and then installed AMD Dual-core Optimizer, and everything has been fine. Definately better when doing stuff in windows. As I dont use Cool`n`Quiet, I havent installed the newer processor drivers or installed any of these hotfixes. So far so good....

The XS thread still recommends installing all three; driver, hotfix, and then optimizer.

However I would agree with Biglunn. If you have disabled Cool 'n' Quiet (for overclocking) then surely you only need to install the AMD Optimizer or the MS Hotfix (without registry changes). This alone should be enough to address the stuttering/timing issue in games.

I haven't tried it myself as I don't have dual core... ...yet.

My newly installed 3800 X2 is showing in devcie manager as having no drivers installed - and when I run the:

"AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (x86 and x64 exe) 1.3.2 "

from here

I get a failed installation. Great, really fun upgrade this is!

Any ideas? I've tried the Dual Core Optimiser, makes no difference.

Not noticed any problems with mine at all but installed the hotfix anyway, not noticed any difference

Maybe your motherboard needs a BIOS update?

Read all this thread from tweak guides, this bloke Koroush ghazi knows his stuff.

He says that the Amd driver is not needed if you are not using cool n quiet and u dont need ms hotfix either just the amd dual core optimiser.

There is some other great stuff there as well, spent a day optimising my system with his tweaking companion.

I installed the dual core optimiser on mine and I have had no problems with my system yet

I updated to the BIOS with the latest date on the DFI website - 329. My old BIOS was 414-3, TCCD RAM optimised. There are a lot on BIOS's for the SLI-D that aren't on DFI's website, very confusing...

marv_1 - thanks - I'm certainly not running CnC, so maybe I'll just install the DC optimiser and leave it at that...

So if I understood this thread I do not need to do anything with my Opteron 165?

Using XP SP1 with all SP2 updates, never had any of the problems described here, although I do think it does take a loooong time for the machine to load into XP. 10 revolutions atleast at the XP splash screen.

That's normally caused by having a lot of peripheral hardware (USB stuff etc). Also, make sure you disable any IDE channels, serial ports, parallel ports etc that you aren't using. These old interfaces aren't very plug'n'play friendly and do tend to slow things down if nothing is connected.

Just read this thread and the reports that the optimizer won't install on Opteron systems! Eeek, I've got an Opty on the way...

Can anyone here confirm that this is the case? I would have thought the fix will still be required and it is basically the same core.

Ideally only the "AMD Cpu Driver "needs to be installed for the X2 this will drematlically make the system more responsive after a fresh install and noticable improvements in games. The driver is far more then just c&q as it a driver that tells windows how to use it properly since no dualcore driver exists in windows itself. This is a driver that must be installed to see max performance of the X2.

The Microsoft hotfix isnt actively supported and doesnt do much if anything anyway.

The Amd optimser isnt a neccesity either and in my case does more harm then good. Slightly better level loading time(less glitchy) in Darkstar but the optimiser also kills planetside stability (well....makes it a lot less stable lets say :) ) The optimiser has no apparant effect in general windows and app usage and has caused me blue screens.

I dont know where your getting your information, but dual core is seen no different in windows than a multi-processor system. Which windows does support properly. Its not about the driver support at all with processors. Windows will see the dual core as two processors, not recognising that they are on one die, and then will install the SMP Kernel that'll start farming out tasks to each core. Drivers dont come into the equation at all.

The AMD Optimiser is designed for games that try to access the CPU timers directly, which can cause stuttering. Not all games do however. Hence why A) theres no effect in windows & B) why some games benefit from it and some dont.

Very interesting thread.

Is it necessary to install the unsupported MS hotfix now that AMD have released the Optimizer??? Aren't they supposed to do more or less just the same thing
Also is the reg edit needed if only installing the Optimizer and not the hotfix?

I've had the X2 driver installed for about a month now, I didn't know anything about these other two fixes.

well, i've only installed the amd driver and the optimiser and i've had no problems, so i won't be installing the MS hotfix anytime soon.

To answer my own question. The AMD Optimizer installs just fine on a dual core Opteron. It adds the switch to your boot.ini and a driver/exe combination to sync the Time Stamp Counters. I haven't bothered with the CPU driver as I am not using Cool 'n' Quiet.

Here's an interesting one:

My Hauppauge Nov-t DVB TV card wouldn't find any channels or work with my X2 3800 until I loaded the AMD Dual-Core Optimizer.

Hope this may help out others.

T

But now with the Optimiser loaded I don't get a score in PCMark2004
