Having a bit of a dilemma, I run my home studio on a x4 Phenom and its always running out of asio usage (CPU usage), it's run at a conservative 3.4-3.6ghz while working.

Cubase is fully multitasking so I'm after what would be the best system out of the i7 920 or Phenom x6 for my needs? I have plenty of cooling available so would be looking to clock them up over 4ghz.

Cheers guys :)

I'd say a 2600K tbh!

Cubase runs great on my X4 640 @ 3GHZ, but then again i'm only using one hypersonic for 16 tracks.

I'm guessing you're using more/other synths

But you can prob hit 5GHZ with a 2600k, not to mention it has hyperthreading, and is 32nm (cooler/more efficient)

Or wait till june, see what Bulldozer has to offer us :P

If now I say go for the 2600K. It performs about 10% better per clock compared to the Nehalem architecture and a high chance to overclock to 4.5ghz or above.

But if I was you I would wait for Bulldozer. Should hopefully be out in 2 months, and looking from early leaks the multithreading performance looks quite promising.

Cheers guys, the 2600k is a little out of my price range at the mo, the origional plan was to wait for bulldozer but its taking so long I'm looking for something in the mean time to tide me over. The x6 looks very promising if it will just drop straight in. Does anyone know if the nehalem architecture is more suited to cubase than the x6's as all the pre built music PC's have an Intel in??

Yes jamiman, IV got addictive drums running, quite a few waves plugins etc for compression and reverberations etc. Also I record in 96khz so it ramps up my CPU usage really quickly unfortunately but after recordingin high quality I couldn't go back to 44.1 :)
