AMD Zen 6 rumours

Well, this could throw wrench into AMD's gears for x3D CPUs, including Zen 6. Even if nothing gets slowed down much, pricing (because of possible settlement and licensing) could be affected and go up again.

Unlikely to affect Zen 6. Zen 16 more likely.

Adeia are known Patent Trolls, they are looking for a quick easy payout from a company flush with cash, they will lose....
The 3D packing technology was a partnership between AMD and TSMC, AMD have responded to this saying there is no detailed patent that Adeia hold, it is simply a vague idea about stacking chips, something that has been an idea since long before Adeia existed. AMD/TSMC created the technology to make the idea reality. It consists of specific circuitry design (AMD) and packaging (TSMC) these things are specific to their technologies, AMD's circuitry cannot be transplanted in to another CPU because its part of the CPU's design.
In fact the first 3D Stacking tech was HBM memory, again AMD designed it in partnership with SKHynix, 2013, Adeia was founded in 2022 purely to file patents of existing technology and then try to extract money from the people who created those technologies. Adeia could not have invented a technology that was in use 9 years before they existed, Patent Trolls.

for example...

Its gone to court because AMD refuse to pay them a penny, i hope AMD bleed them dry. Patent Trolls are a cancer to innovation. Like Musk AMD should counter sue them for some BS and like that make them drain finances defending it.

Not sure where you got the idea Adeia was founded in 2022? It goes back over 30yrs back to 1990 and was founded by researches from IBM known as Tessera technologies. It has had an IP licensing business from two decades ago and owns DTS audio for example as well as TiVo merger with them. It just split its business in 2022 to Adeia for the IP side and Xperi for product sides. Not saying the patent is going to hold for what they are doing against AMD/TMC however it is wrong to say the are just another company made up completely in 2022.

Problems with courts are that it doesn't matter what the truth is but only how good given lawyer's arguments are. Judges rarely know much about the topic nor want to learn. Ergo, it's never a 100% chance to win or lose, hence this can still last years in courts. On the plus side, unlikely they could block AMD from using the tech whilst the case is ruining. And yes, fingers crossed they will bleed these trolls dry, as AMD has cash now to fight them.

I know..... :) and if you want to bleed them dry the way to do it is drag them through the courts for the next decade.

It might take longer than that given AMD appear to be sitting on around $5bn cash reserves at the moment. Edit - I'm sure that's got nothing to do with the timing of the speculative case.... ;)

"CEO Lisa Su confirmed that AMD’s next-generation EPYC processors based on the Zen 6 architecture will launch in 2026. Codenamed “Venice,” the new EPYC series uses TSMC’s 2 nm process technology and is already undergoing lab validation. According to Su, the chips demonstrate strong results in testing and deliver “significant improvements in performance, energy efficiency, and compute density.” Major cloud providers are expected to be among the first to adopt Venice once production ramps up in 2026."

Do we know yet if this will require a new chipset motherboard? Or will am6 cpus works on current motherboards?

i was prepared to wait until summer 2026 to get Zen6/RDNA5, but the rumour a month or two back indicating 2027 caused me to jump now, and replace my lockdown 5800x / 6800XT system.

i deliberately went low end on the CPU/memory with the intention of a mid-life upgrade. the motherboard is absurdely over-spec'ed (and BTF was fun to build).

The article is talking about Zen6 EPYC on socket SP6. AM6 is AMDs future desktop socket and will most likely be DDR6 based, released for Zen 8.

Ryzen 6 (and very likely 7) will be AM5.

In light of
a) Zen6 probably being delayed to end of 2026 and
b) rumors of reworked memory controller for higher speeds
there will definitely be a new chipset and a generation of motherboards
that probably allow DDR5 to hit higher speeds up to 10000
