AMD4200 X2 won't run in dual channel?

Just bought a second hand AMD 4200 X2 to replace the Opteron 146 I'm currently running.

Specs:

DFI Ultra-D
2x1Gb Samsung UCCC RAM

With the 146 I run my RAM in dual channel in slots 1&3 without problems.

The 4200 will post with a single module (doesn't matter which module, both are good) in either of the outer slots or with both modules in the two outer slots fine, but it won't post with any combination that includes a module on the inner two DIMM slots, meaning I can't run dual channel.

I've tried posting with one module, setting 2T command rate, disabling bank interleave, running a 133mhz divider, slackening the timings, increasing Vcore and Vdimm, but none of these measures will get it to post with modules in the inner slots.

I've tried the current official bios, the 704-BTA and the 623-3 with no luck.

I've checked all the pins on the CPU, swapped my 146 back in (it runs fine in dual channel) and I'm left mystified

hiya mate

Sorry you havent had any advice so far, have you had any luck?

Have you got any mates that have different ram - just to see whether it makes any difference?

or if you have any 2* 512mb sticks to see whether that works?

Let me know how you get on

Any chance you can try the chip in another board? As the memory controller is on the chip it sounds like it may be faulty.

Thats the thing - I had the cpu before I sold it to Dave, in an Ultra D with no problems at all

Problem solved, it was something weird, if I tighten my waterblock too tight it stops the 2 closer DIMM slots working, very odd......

sounds like one of the tracks on the board is cracked, or possible a bad joint somewhere. Tightening the block is causing the board to flex, i bet thats whats doing it.

Yeah thats what I had in mind, the boards seen some serious abuse over the time I've had it :D

Now its working I'll just be gentle with it until I see the end of S939 :)
