American Express

It's one of the lesser accepted Schemes which is a shame as the customer service is generally regarded as being regularly of a higher standard than some of the others.

It is really good, I've only had to ring them twice but they sorted everything out within a couple of minutes.

I used to have a platinum charge card. It was useful for the year we got married to cover travel insurance for two holidays, airport lounge access, and various other perks.

I think it cost £300 for the year back then, and on top of all the above, you got a load of membership reward points that were worth about £220.

My wife has a total nightmare getting travel insurance, and the American Express insurance was brilliant. We had our luggage turn up late on one holiday and we just got told to go out and spend whatever we needed to keep going for a few days. Claiming was an absolute breeze.

Had Gold charge card for a while now, the reward points have got me a few freebies/ reduced cost outings which makes it worth it to be honest. Their customer service has been very responsive on the few occasions I've had to deal with them, friendly Scottish call centre.

Yes, not everywhere takes AMEX, so you have to be aware of that but I always have Visa and a MasterCard in my wallet too. But I try to maximise spending on the AMEX for the points.

Plus, it's Gold, I look cool... right? ;)

The 2% cashback credit cards often end up giving you a greater return, are accepted everywhere and have no fee. So no I don't use an Amex.

I like the points. Pay it off completely every month, no charges, great service, 3k a week cash withdraw if I so choose (but don't), lounge access etc. not used the concierge though.

Mine's platinum.

I have one through work (standard card) - generally decent, but not every where takes it.

Haven't read all the posts but I've got the Gold, as well as a few third party ones; Nectar, BA, BMI, American Airlines etc.

The Gold is my day-to-day card and it by far pays for the annual fee and more,

I have had the Platinum cashback card since I left Uni, have had quite a hefty bundle back from my purchases/expenses over the years.

Recently switched to the Amex BA card and got an additional card for my partner, 1£ = 1 avios point, plus intro bonus, excellent!

Pros and Cons pretty much as already outlined;

Excellent customer service, but card acceptance can be a little troublesome at smaller places. I always have a mastercard backup with me.

I've got the Gold charge card but will cancel at the end of the free year. Membership points and cashback are the only reason I got it.

Customer service is great, they've even given me their direct number for the Brighton office.

AFAIK, the average transaction cost for a vendor when a customer uses Amex is around 45p so I can understand why some people don't accept it.

Apparently Amex recently reduced their merchant fees, which is potentially why more merchants are now accepting it, like Primark.

Something interesting that I just learnt is that Amex cards issued by other companies (like Lloyds and Barclaycard) are going to be affected by the likely EU merchant fee cap, but their direct-to-customer cards won't be. This means that these companies may end up reducing or removing these cards in the future. Also, if the merchant fee cap is introduced, we may see Amex having to reduce their fees in order to retain customers, which may have an affect on the reward programmes that they offer.

I did have one but I binned it after a while, just never got used, I don't need a credit card. Too much commotion.

My credit rating is stellar and I have more than enough cash that I don't need one for emergencies.

The best reasons to use a credit/charge card are not to borrow money or for low-cash emergencies.
