AMEX companion voucher - Worth it/Any feedback?

Yes it's worth it and easily the most valuable credit card reward you can earn if you use it effectively. The best value you will get from it is booking long haul business class flights as this can save you hundreds of thousands of avios. For example, I recently booked return business class flights to Buenos Aires for 220,000 avios + £1,200 for 2 people which would have cost 440,000 avios + £1,200 had I booked it without the companion voucher. If you value 1 avios at 1p which is generally regarded as a good rule of thumb (although recently you have been able to purchase avios for a low as 0.84p), that works out at £1,700 per ticket which is a pretty decent price for 2 16hr flights in business when comparable economy tickets are costing £1,200 or so. If you compare it to a cash fare of a business class ticket (£4k + for the same flight I am referring to) then it represents even better value although if you would never pay that amount for a cash fare (as I wouldn't) it's not a great comparison.

In contrast you can end up getting pretty poor value from the voucher in you redeem in long haul economy. Taking an example of New York, an off peak return economy fare for 1 person is 50,000 + £100 for one person, so if you use your voucher for two tickets you will be paying 50,000 + £200 or £350/ticket using the 1p avios valuation. It's quite easy to find flights to New York for a similar price and you wouldn't have forked out the £250 fee for the Amex card to earn the voucher.

Redeeming short haul economy you aren't saving much avios so again you're not getting great value from the voucher considering the £250 fee to earn it.

So it does take some research to understand where to get value and you also need a decent avios balance to utilise it effectively.

In terms of getting the flights you want, yes unfortunately this isn't straightforward. For business class redemptions BA only release a guaranteed 4 seats on each flight 355 days before the depature date. For very popular destinations (e.g. Sydney, Singapore, Maldives, Japan), these get snapped up within minutes. BA release more seats sporadically depending on how well cash tickets are selling on each flight.

You therefore need to plan a year ahead when booking flights or be flexible in terms of dates/destination when redeeming the voucher to get good value. You can use tools such as Seatspy to track the release of more avios seats.

The above is just the tip of the iceberg. I'd suggest reading through the guides on https://www.headforpoints.com/

They are well worth it. I used to gain loads of miles using my BA Amex for work, I still have like 400k BA (plus 200k Virgin, a few hundred K American Airlines)

The companion voucher is great because it also includes buy one get one free on air miles flights. I went first class to Kenya with an ex on the companion voucher -just cost me one load of points (like 120k? I can't remember). You need to plan ahead though

How do you work it to get 1 Avios for 1p? I've been looking into this too and on the face of it, you get 1.5 Avios for a £1 so to get 220000 points you'd have to spend £146k?
Probably not explained very well. What I mean is how much should 1 avios be valued at? Once you know that figure then you can work out how much value you are getting when spending avios. There's a good article on it here.

The 1.5 avios for £1 is just the earning rate on the prem plus card so no reflection on the value of avios itself.

@weringo - Very useful thank you! :)

I only have 13k Avios, single guy, no set long term plans for far away trips...maybe this is one for later/next round.

I'd suggest looking at the various credit card sign up bonuses to accumulate your avios balance as that's a much better way of earning avios that just spending on your card.

The companion voucher is good for solo travel as well - instead of getting 241 you can use it to halve the amount of avios you need for a return flight. Flying solo also makes it easier to find seat availability

Ah I see, I had a look at that article just after posting lol.

How do you rack up the Avios points without having to spend £150k?

Credit card sign up bonuses is the best way. In the last 12 months Barclaycard ran a 100k sign up bonus, whilst Amex ran a 60k bonus on their Platinum card and 70k on their Prem Plus card. Two people could have accumulated 460k avios on those bonuses alone plus referral bonuses and earning through spending. You can cancel those cards and reapply after two years and be eligbile for the sign up bonuses again.

Sign up bonuses aren't quite at the same level at the moment but one person can still earn a combined 80k from the above 3 cards based on current offers.

Annoyingly from October Amex are removing pro-rata refunds for the annual fees so churning through their cards for sign up bonuses won't be as effective as it is now.

I remember seeing that Amex offer last year, should have taken it then. Does that mess with your credit rating though, if you keep opening and closing accounts?

Not in my experience - my partner and I have been doing it for years and had no trouble getting a mortgage a few years ago.

Not too long ago you would become eligible for the Amex sign up bonuses again after just six months so the credit card churning was even more intense. Those were the days :p

Seems like a lot of faff for very little benefit.
Its a flight for free (just taxes) if original flight bought with avios. Its a no brainer if you travel a lot or have in the past and can shift spend to a credit card.

We used ours for business return to Tokyo in 2016, £1300 return for us 2 plus our 10 month old.

We are currently sitting on 250k points (i got the 100k bonus from BC recently). I have the upgrade voucher due to spend achieved and hopefully have another with my barclays account by December.
