I was recently thinking recently when playing Amiga games on an emu about how tempted I am to dig up my amiga from my parents loft.

But then thought, how hard would it be to open up an Amiga case, take out everything, put in a PC motherboard, CPU etc etc, put on a PC keyboard in place of the Amiga's. Run somethign like XP. Put on an Amiga OS... voila.

A nice compact PC for playing retro games

What do you guys think? do you think it'd be possible?

i think heat and space would be a issue but does sound like a cool idea.

thats what i was thinking, but on the A500, behind the keyboard is the grill at the back, if you mod that so the CPU fan comes up to the case, it shouldn't be a problem as the air goes out of the system. In theory anyways.

Plus it'd not be a high end performance machine anyway, could even use laptop components thinking about it

With an Amiga 500, it could be possible to get a mini-itx board in there, or even a butchered laptop board. Laptop board would also be good because of the ultra low-profile coolers and SODIMMs so you don't have to go hunting for low profile RAM.

You wouldn't need to put a Windows keyboard in it. You could make your own controller with remaps of required Windows keys. The custom controller/matrix would require the most work and you'd need a good understanding of electronics to do it though.

Yeah plus laptop components are as you mention, designed to be in a small enclosure. It would be relatively easy to dismantle a laptop and put it into an amiga case(in theory)

As for using the built in keyboard, that sounds quite complicated to me lol

Go have a google for English Amiga Board (where you may find some members from here ;) of course) and you'll see several modded Amigas. Pretty sure what you suggested has been done a few times before with pictures :)
