Amiga controls heating for school

Nothing new my Dad used my old Amiga 500 to run the heating in our house. Used it for about 10 years this was sometime in the 90's.

How exactly does that work? the AC in the schools cannot possibly be 30 years old, so does it get updated every time a new system is installed? And how does it communicate with a modern AC unit via modem? does it connect to a BMS system in each school? That would make more sense but then why is it needed if each school has it's own BMS it's redundant no? :S

Probably uses Arexx - powerful scripting language on the Amiga - love playing around with it on my machines.

NASA had a range of Amigas in use until recently.

Heh, it's more reliable. The systems and OSs from that era never went wrong.

If they were XP machines you can guarantee at least once a month they would screw up and need rebooting. Plus fans and HDDs would die etc.

The school has AC? Has to the US. Over here you're lucky if you can get the windows open (this coming from someone who works in school.)

AC is something I can only dream of. Anywhere upstairs is roasting at the moment, (large rooms and one very flat roof that soaks up heat like a sponge)

Commodore sure knew how to make computers. Shame about the business side of things. Oh well! Parents recently cleared out loft and now I have my A1200 again! 17 years since I last turned it on, I turned it on and the 200MB HD still booted into Workbench :) gonna put flash card with games in it! :)

25 years ago there was an Amiga computer club in Crewe, from what I recall it was almost unheard of an Amiga having hardware failure. My Amiga lasted 7 years then I sold it still working.

Funnily enough when visiting Grand Rapids quite a bit reminded me of the UK as it probably was during the 1970s (my earliest memories being early 1980s). Things like the lorries trucks many of them were superficially of a style that died out in the early 80s here, layout/style of the petrol gas stations and supermarkets, etc. (they even had bottlebanks in the supermarkets - that I've not seen in a long while heh).

I used to have some fun with Arexx. ;) I had 68060 card in my A1200, cost me an arm and a leg but stuff did fly. I asked the email client YAM.

There used to be an electronic kit (I think from Maplins) that allowed you interface with the Amiga and control electronic equipment can't quite remember how but I do know it used Amiga Basic. My Dad's not a programmer in any sense but I do remember altering basic statements to change the values.

In fact I have just remembered the first version ran off a Vic 20 and then he migrated it to my old Amiga so beat that one !

Our schools are lucky if they can afford books from this century

You must be joking. Schools are full of the latest tech especially Acadamies. When I worked for a Doc management company I went round schools doing training. In the IT rooms they had piles of laptops and ipads etc and all the kids are walking round with 13" screen laptops. It really opened my eyes. This was schools in London, midlands and North West.

They get massive discounts on software and hardware. eg Windows 2008 licences for £10, MS Office 2010 for £5 each, Ipads for £100 each.

Don't be fooled some schools have loads of IT tech.
